Nahtlos an die international gefeierten Vorgängeralben Stories und Apologues anknüpfend, legt der in Berlin lebende Komponist und Vibraphonist Masayoshi Fujita mit seinem kommenden Album Book of Life den dritten Teil seiner Trilogie von Solo-Vibraphon-Alben vor. Das Album Book of Life erscheint am 27. Juli 2018 bei Erased Tapes. Parallel dazu wird auch Stories, der Auftakt zur Trilogie und Masayoshis erste Veröffentlichung unter eigenem Namen, als weltweite Neuauflage bei Erased Tapes erscheinen.

Mit Book of Life setzt Masayoshi seine Mission fort, das Vibraphon – ein vergleichsweise junges Instrument, das in Orchester- und Jazz-Konstellationen gewöhnlich eher eine Nebenrolle spielt – in den Mittelpunkt zu rücken. Als ausgebildeter Schlagzeuger, fing Masayoshi schließlich damit an, mit dem Vibraphon zu experimentieren: Er präparierte die Metallplatten des Instruments mit Alufolie oder mit Perlenketten, ersetzte einen wenn nicht sogar bei Schlägel durch einen Cellobogen (wie z.B. auf Fog) oder benutzte das andere Ende der Schlägel, um vollkommen neue Klangwelten und Ambient-Stimmungen zu erzeugen – siehe Titelsong des besagten Albums. Allein dieser Fokus aufs Vibraphon macht Masayoshi zu einer Ausnahmeerscheinung: Er hat sein ganzes künstlerisches Schaffen darauf ausgerichtet, dieses faszinierende und oftmals unterschätzte Instrument zu zelebrieren – und so einen ganz eigenen Ansatz zwischen Ambient und moderner Komposition zu prägen.

„Ich bin davon überzeugt, dass man dem Vibraphon noch viel mehr interessante und schöne Klänge entlocken kann – Klänge, die man so noch nie zuvor gehört hat. Es ist ein recht junges Instrument, und doch wird es fast immer auf dieselbe Art gespielt. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass es da noch viel mehr zu erkunden gibt mit dieser spannenden Erfindung.“

His route to Berlin was a roundabout one. Introduced to music via Bon Jovi, his first stint abroad naturally took him to the motherland of rock, the United States. After a year in the USA, he returned to Japan to study film. His love for movie making, however, proved less pronounced than his admiration for Bon Jovi, a band he can still quote and sing from memory. He decided to learn how to play the drums, followed by extensive vibraphone training to craft and play his own, mostly jazz and electronic-influenced compositions. Determined not to stick to traditional vibraphone styles or techniques, Masayoshi started to prepare his instrument with pieces of metal, strips of foil and similar objects. The resulting new sounds, akin to distortions, help to expand the vibraphone spectrum without eroding the instrument’s intrinsic character or even abandoning it altogether. Besides his extremely reduced and deliberate style of playing, it is this aural redefinition that makes Masayoshi Fujita’s craft so remarkable and noteworthy in my eyes. Literally caught in his spell, it was a delight and privilege to accompany his play. On a different note, Masayoshi’s wood prints should not go unmentioned. The cover and booklet of Bird, Lake, Objects present concise, abstract and monochrome landscapes and thus a visual complement to his music.
