This programme has been nurtured from a selection of pieces inspired by English gardens, including Vaughan Williams’ lovely ‘Fantasia on Greensleeves,’ spreading out towards French and Italian repertoire that evokes pastoral settings of birdsong, fountains and springs, and topped with a light-hearted musical picnic dessert. Along the way we are treated to the exquisite melody of Elgar’s Chanson de matin and the nostalgic atmosphere of William Alwyn’s ‘Naiades.’ Nino Rota’s film music credits include The Godfather, and his sublime and festive Sonata adds a celebratory touch to the personal joy of these performers’ many years of musical friendship. The combination of flute and harp always creates an atmosphere of beauty, with contrasting but complementary sonorities that have been exploited by a multitude of composers over the years. The pastoral theme of this program has been carefully chosen to include music from the Baroque and Romantic eras right up to the contemporary.

Suzanne Shulman
One of Canada’s foremost flutists, Suzanne Shulman has earned international critical acclaim for solo recitals in renowned venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall and the Chopin Institute in Warsaw. She is a graduate of the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto where she studied with Robert Aitken. As a three-time Canada Council grant recipient she also trained in Europe with Christian Lardé, Michel Debost, Marcel Moyse and Jean-Pierre Rampal.

Ms. Shulman has appeared as soloist with major Canadian and international orchestras and is a frequent guest at music festivals at home and abroad. She has performed with the Orford, St. Lawrence and Penderecki string quartets, and also with the late Glenn Gould with whom she collaborated on a variety of recording projects available on the Sony Classical label. With more than 30 recordings in her discography Suzanne can be heard on the CBC, Folkways, Crystal, Golden Crest, Centrediscs, Opening Day and Marquis labels. She is the flute soloist on all the award-winning Classical Kids recordings.

As a founding member of the outstanding ensembles Camerata Canada, Trio Lyra and ChamberWORKS Suzanne Shulman has premiered commissioned works by many prominent Canadian composers including Harry Freedman, Srul Irving Glick, Andrew MacDonald, Milton Barnes, Marjan Mozetich, Glenn Buhr, Christos Hatzis and Jacques Hétu. She currently performs with pianist Valerie Tryon, harpist Erica Goodman and the Festival of the Sound ensemble.

Suzanne Shulman’s extensive teaching career has included the Royal Conservatory of Music and the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. She now accepts a limited number of students in Hamilton at McMaster University, at her home studio as well as by invitation to teach master classes abroad.

Erica Goodma
A native of Toronto, Canada, the Juno Award-winning harpist Erica Goodman received her training at The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and at the Interlochen Arts Camp and the Curtis Institute of Music in the US.

Already a concert performer in her teens, Goodman played under the baton of Igor Stravinsky when he recorded in Toronto. Since then, she has appeared worldwide as a recitalist and chamber musician and is also a charter member of Toronto’s New Music Concerts Ensemble and the Esprit Orchestra. Erica Goodman plays regularly in the Hamilton Philharmonic and has appeared as soloist with the orchestra on numerous occasions. Many Canadian composers have written works for her, some of which are included on her albums. Several of her recordings spotlight the music of Marjan Mozetich and Jeffrey Ryan.
