Händels dramatische Theodora in Luxusbesetzung: „Mit einer Luxusbesetzung für Händels Theodora lockte die Philharmonie Essen die Liebhaber barocker Musik und Oratorien“, schrieb Das Opernglas begeistert von einem hochkarätigen Cast, der noch in den Nebenrollen mit Weltstars aufwartet wie der Mezzosopranistin Joyce DiDonato und dem Tenor Michael Spyres. Die konzertante Aufführung mit dem Ensemble Il Pomo dʼOro unter Leitung von Maxim Emelyanychev erscheint nun als professioneller Mitschnitt und setzt neue Maßstäbe für Händels selten gespieltes Oratorium.

Als reifes Alterswerk des Komponisten verzichtet Theodora gänzlich auf Effekthascherei und äußere Dramatik. Händel interessierte das Seelendrama, er deckt in seiner Musik die feinsten Gefühlsregungen auf. Im Mittelpunkt steht das Liebespaar Theodora und Didymus, verkörpert von der US-amerikanischen Koloratursopranistin Lisette Oropesa und dem französischen Countertenor Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian. Als frühe Christen wollen sie sich nicht den römischen Gottheiten unterwerfen, sondern sind eher bereit für den jeweils anderen zu sterben. Die aufopferungsvolle Liebe kann den Statthalter des römischen Kaisers nicht erweichen. Statt das Todesurteil über Theodora aufzuheben, lässt er beide Liebende hinrichten. Vom Cembalo aus leitet Maxim Emelyanychev das Geschehen. „Sein zupackendes, höchst lebendiges Dirigat schafft spannende Kontraste und seine feine, nuancierte Sicht auf die Charaktere lässt alle Figuren als Menschen aus Fleisch und Blut erscheinen“, lobt Das Opernglas.
