The Philadelphia Orchestra and conductor Marin Alsop present a live recording with highlights of Gershwin’s self-proclaimed American “Folk Opera” Porgy and Bess, together with a stellar cast and the Morgan State University Choir. Since its premiere in 1935, Porgy and Bess has been one of the most significant attempts to – following Antonin Dvořák’s famous instruction of 1893 – create American classical music inspired by Afro-American styles such as jazz, spirituals and the blues. It has also proven to be a powerful catalyst for bringing more diverse casts to the opera stage. The hard-knock life at a Charleston waterfront tenement is presented here by an outstanding cast including Lester Lynch (Porgy), Angel Blue (Bess, Clara and Serena), Chauncey Packer (Sportin’ Life) and Kevin Short (Crown, Jake).

Marin Alsop is one of today’s most acclaimed conductors, and the first woman to serve as the head of a major orchestra in the United States, South America, Austria and Britain. The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the world’s preeminent orchestras. Multi-award-winning soprano Angel Blue is one of the most promising voices of her generation, while Chauncey Packer is arguably one of the greatest and sought-after Sportin’ Life interpreters today. Lester Lynch and Kevin Short both enjoy a flourishing stage career, as well as a vast PENTATONE discography.

gilt weltweit als inspirierende und einflussreiche Dirigentenpersönlichkeit, als eine Orchesterleiterin mit Gestaltungswillen und Leidenschaft, getragen von der tiefen Überzeugung, dass "Musik unser Leben verändern kann". International wird sie geschätzt für ihre innovativen Programme sowie für ihr Engagement für Publikumsschichten aller Altersgruppen. Seit September 2019 ist sie neue Chefdirigentin des ORF Radio-Symphonieorchesters Wien.

2021 wird Marin Alsop zur Ehrendirigentin des Baltimore Symphony Orchestra ernannt ­– der krönende Abschluss einer 14-jährigen Verpflichtung als musikalische Leiterin, während der sie das Orchester auf seine erste Europa-Tournee führte, Preise für zahlreiche Aufnahmen erhielt, mehr als zwei Dutzend Werke uraufführte und die „Orchkids“ gründete – ein Musikvermittlungsprogramm für benachteiligte Kinder in Baltimore.

Marin Alsop wurde 2020 zur ersten Musikdirektorin des National Orchestral Institute + Festival (NOI+F) ernannt – ein Programm des Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center der University of Maryland – und wird dort eine neu gegründete Dirigentenakademie leiten sowie jedes Jahr im Juni mehrere Konzerte mit den NOI + F Philharmonic geben. Nach sieben Jahren als Musikdirektorin wurde sie 2019 Ehrendirigentin des brasilianischen São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP), wo sie weiterhin jede Saison große Projekte durchführt.

Marin Alsop unterhält seit vielen Jahren gute Beziehungen zu den großen Londoner Orchestern, außerdem gastiert sie regelmäßig beim Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Dänischen Nationalorchester, Budapest Festival Orchester, Concertgebouworkest und bei der Filarmonica della Scala. In den Jahren 2019–20 kehrte sie zum Philadelphia Orchestra, zum Dänischen Nationalorchester und zum Orchestre de Paris zurück, deren Spielzeit sie im September 2020 eröffnete. Marin Alsops umfangreiche Aufnahmetätigkeit wurde mehrfach von der Zeitschrift „Gramophone“ ausgezeichnet. Sie erhielt die begehrte Auszeichnung u. a. für die Symphonien von Brahms, Dvořák und Prokofjew (Naxos). Ihr besonderes Interesse gilt der Musik der Gegenwart; sie war 25 Jahre Künstlerische Leiterin des California Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.

Als erste und einzige Dirigentin wurde Marin Alsop 2019 vom Weltwirtschaftsforum mit dem renommierten Crystal Award ausgezeichnet. Sie war die erste Frau am Dirigentenpult bei der BBC Late Night of the Proms. Neben zahlreichen anderen Lehrverpflichtungen ist sie als Artist in Residence an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien tätig und am Peabody Institut der John Hopkins University. Ehrendoktorate wurden ihr von der Universität Yale und der Juilliard School verliehen. Um den Karriereweg von Dirigentinnen zu fördern und zu unterstützen, gründete sie 2002 die Taki Concordia Conducting Fellowship, die 2020 ihr zu Ehren in die Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship umbenannt wurde.
