Newly remastered: Russ Morgan was one of America's most popular big-band leaders of the 1930's, 40's and 50's. Staring out in Pennsylvania in the early 1920's, he played trombone in bands with Jimmy Dorsey and Tommy Dorsey, moved to New York and wrote arrangements for John Phillip Sousa and Victor Herbert, toured Europe with Paul Specht's orchestra which included Paul Whiteman and Artie Shaw, and joined Jean Goldkette's orchestra upon his return to the states. For a short time, Morgan arranged for the Fletcher Henderson orchestra and in 1935 played trombone in the Original Dixieland Jazz Band. He became a music director for Brunswick records and was later offered the position of Musical Director for Detroit Radio Station WXYZ. His show, "Music In The Morgan Manner," became one of the most popular radio shows in the U.S. In 1939 he formed his own orchestra which had record breaking runs at some of the most prestigious ballrooms around the country. His orchestra continued to be popular throughout the 1950's. In the late 50's and early 1960's he recorded several fine albums for the Everest label, pioneers in the field of stereo recording. Recorded in 1961, "Morgan Time" showcases the easy going mellow moods the Morgan orchestra is famous for with a beautiful selection of jazz standards and show tunes. Morgan is featured throughout on piano and his famous "wah wah" trombone. All selections.

Russ Morgan
was born April 29, 1904 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Russ was a big band orchestra leader, pianist, trombonist, composer, and musical arranger. Morgan was encouraged by his parents at the young age of 7 to pursue his musical interests. His father had played the drums when he wasn’t working in a coal mine and his mother was a pianist. Morgan began playing in a local band, The Scranton Sirens, which was popular during the 1920s in Pennsylvania. The Scranton Sirens relinquished quite a few magnificent artists into the world of music. Such names as, Tommy Dorsey the famous trombonist and big band leader, Billy Lustig a violinist, and older Dorsey brother Jimmy on the saxophone.

Morgan’s greatest success was when he was offered the position of Musical Director for Detroit Radio Station WXYZ. He had an extremely popular radio show called “Music in the Morgan Manner.” He stayed successful into the 1950s with his orchestra playing popular music for listening and dancing, they called these bands “sweet bands.” Morgan passed away August 7, 1969 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 65. Russ Morgan holds a Hollywood star in L.A. for his contributions to recording.
