Im Jahr 2001 wurde Billy Reeves, der der Welt gerade Sophie Ellis-Bextor (über ihre Band theaudience) vorgestellt hatte, in seinem Morris Minor von Joyridern in Stücke gerammt - was zu einem zweiwöchigen Koma und einem Jahr mit Krankenhausaufenthalten führte. 2017 schenkte ihm sein Bruder zwei Mini-Discs, die er aus dem Wrack gerettet hatte, darunter Demos von Songs, die er vergessen hatte - aufgrund einer crashbedingten Amnesie.

Mark Morriss von den Chartstürmern The Bluetones aus Hounslow stimmte zu, sie zu singen, und mit der Unterstützung von Richard Archer (Hard-Fi), zusammen mit Crayola Lectern (Zofff / Departure Lounge) und Mark Peters (Engineers), sollten diese Songs den Debüt-Longplayer von The Helicopter of The Holy Ghost bilden.

Das ursprüngliche Konzept für das Material entstand wahrscheinlich, als Billy noch bei Sony unter Vertrag war, was auf einen kommerzielleren Sound hindeutete. Crayola Lecterns Beteiligung am Klavier half jedoch, die Aufnahmen in eine mehr 'Canterbury'-Richtung zu lenken, mit Einflüssen von Caravan, Robert Wyatt & Co.

Mit einem groovigen Gastaufgebot, darunter Simon Raymonde von den Cocteau Twins, Dale Davis von Amy Winehouse's Band, Andy Lewis von Paul Wellers Gruppe, Smiley von Joe Strummer's Mescalaros und Thomas Anderson von den Kscope-Kollegen Gazpacho, ist der weitreichende Einfluss in diesem sehr süßen, sanften, beruhigenden Album von Originalität und Vielseitigkeit offensichtlich.

In 2001 Billy Reeves, fresh from introducing the world to Sophie Ellis-Bextor (via their band theaudience) was smashed to bits by joyriders whilst in his Morris Minor - resulting in a two-week coma and a year in and out of hospital. In 2017 his brother gave him two mini-discs that had been saved from the wreckage, including demos of songs he had forgotten - due to crash-related amnesia.

Mark Morriss of chart-topping Hounslow janglers The Bluetones agreed to sing them, so with the assistance of Richard Archer (Hard-Fi), along with Crayola Lectern (Zofff / Departure Lounge), and Mark Peters (Engineers), these songs would form the debut long player from The Helicopter of The Holy Ghost.

The original concept for the material was probably while Billy was signed to Sony, which pointed toward a more commercial sound, however Crayola Lectern’s involvement on piano help send the recordings into a more ‘Canterbury’ direction, taking influence from Caravan, Robert Wyatt and the like.

Featuring a groovy guest line-up including Simon Raymonde of Cocteau Twins, Dale Davis from Amy Winehouse’s band, Andy Lewis from Paul Weller’s group, Smiley from Joe Strummer’s Mescalaros and Thomas Anderson of fellow Kscope signees Gazpacho, the wide ranging influence herein is evident throughout a very sweet, gentle, calming album of originality and versatility.
