studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague (The Netherlands) with Paul Verhey and in the United States (Deland, Florida) with the renowned master of flute: Geoffrey Gilbert.
He is emeritus flautist of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra Hilversum, where he played until 2013. Before that, he played in the ‘Omroeporkest’ and the Radio Symphony Orchestra respectively.
Dutch composers like Maarten Bon, Joep Straesser and Konrad Boehmer dedicated works to him, but also foreign composers, like Isang Yun and Jean Françaix. In fact, he recorded the latter’s Divertimento for flute and piano having Mr. Françaix as his accompanist. He is professor of flute at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, The Netherlands.
As a pedagogue, he is known for the way he teaches tone development and the mastery of all its expressive parameters. His successful approach allows students to develop their own voice and reflects in his popular courses on the ‘Blow How’ of the flute. His flute lessons to his students at the Royal Conservatoire are presented combined with a tailor-made weekly yoga class offering a direct link to the posture- and breathing concepts as are being transmitted in the flute lessons.
Thies Roorda is a much sought-after teacher of master classes. He taught in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Spain and Switzerland.
He has collaborated as accompanist with musicians like Angelo Persichilli in the “Festival delle Nazioni ” in Città di Castello, Andrea Oliva in the “one-year flute course” in Bracciano. Other master classes include the flute master class withWilliam Bennett in Amsterdam and bassoon master class with Sergio Azzolini in at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and Rien de Reede in L’Aquila. Recent collaborations include: accompanist for the strings, winds and percussion Department in the Conservatory “A.Casella” in L’Aquila for 2011 and 2012, the Opera2day , 4th and 5th International Festival and Masterclasses organized by “Mozart Italia Terni”.
Alessandro has performed during his career througout Europe as soloist and also with ensembles in many festivals and music events, like “Pietre che cantano 2008” in L’aquila, the radio live “Koffieconcert” for Radio West at the Anton Philipszaal in The Hague and in the “Italian culture institute” in Amsterdam. Many other activities follow in the season 2011 and 2012 including concerts for “XVIII TEMPORADA Musical de la UdL”in Lleida, the concert season in“Nakas Conservatory” in Athens, the “ Muziekzomer Festival ”and in the Liszt Festival at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague where he played the 2nd Liszt Piano Concerto.
He appeared as member of the ASKO Schoënberg Ensemble at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam for the concert season “Zaterdag Matinee”, as soloist with the Brabant Orkest in the Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven and participated for several chamber music concerts seasons in Italy for Associazione Amiternum”,“Società Concerti Barattelli”, “L’Officina musicale”, “Società filarmonica ascolana” performing in piano trio, duo with violin and flute, piano quartet.
His recent repertoire encompasses a large range of modern and contemporary composers such as Boulez,Jolivet,Sollima and Vivier, performed as soloist on the occasion of the Festival “The age of Boulez” organized by the “ Boulez Foundation” and “ Dag in de Branding: Festival voor Nieuwe Muziek”in the Hague and as chamber player for the “Leidse Hofjes Concerten” in Leiden and piano quintet with ensemble “Solisti Aquilani” in L'Aquila. Since 2012 Alessandro has been working with the youth orchestra EUYO and NJO auditions in Holland and in the Royal Conservatory of The Hague as accompanist.
