Info for Anton Zimmermann: Symphonies Vol. 2

This is the second series of further world premiere recordings by the Silesian composer Anton Zimmermann - music full of impressive brilliance and a varied palette of colours, composed in the 1770s for the court chapel of the Prince Primate of Hungary in Bratislava.

When Werner Erhardt and his ensemble l'arte del mondo released their first recording of previously unknown symphonies by Anton Zimmermann, a Silesian-born contemporary of Haydn and one of the most innovative composers of the early classical period in Vienna, the enthusiasm was boundless: ‘A symphonic sensation’ was the verdict of rbb kultur, “absolutely worth listening to” by BR-Klassik and “All three spectacular symphonies stand out from the mainstream of courtly-discreet early classical music like unique pieces of almost unleashed inventiveness” was the verdict of toccata. Anton Zimmermann, who formed the court orchestra in Bratislava into a top ensemble, wrote over 300 works, including 40 symphonies. A real treasure for explorers, as rbb kultur wrote: ‘Rarely does one wait so long for the next CD with more of Zimmermann's symphonies, because Werner Erhardt and his ensemble have not only done an outstanding job in terms of interpretation, but also in terms of music history and editing’ (concerti).

L'arte del mondo under Werner Erhardt have selected further magnificent symphonies by Zimmermann for the second recording: The symphonies in B flat major, E minor and D major. This recording, which is also outstanding in terms of sound technology, is a great listening pleasure, because L'arte del mondo under Werner Erhardt ‘go all out to let the revolutionary pulse of this music be experienced directly’ (toccata).
