Info for Golden Year

Every piece of art that functions as both a creative artistic message and a crafty stylistic statement should also ideally convey an artist's unique point of view to his audience. Guitarist Tony Davis clearly succeeds in doing just that with "Golden Year," his debut album. Supporting him on this hard hitting session are a solid rhythm section comprised of several old friends: pianist David Bryant, bassist Dezron Douglas, and powerhouse drummer Eric McPherson. With a nice combination of creative compositions and clever adaptations, "Golden Year" is insightfully straight ahead, steadily swinging, and refreshingly melodic enough to provide a wide assortment of bright moments to discerning jazz fans everywhere.

"Tony Davis’ debut is a nice combination of creative compositions and interpretations – wide ranging, straight ahead, steadily swinging, and refreshingly melodic enough for an enjoyable listen. His remarkable talent belies his youthful stature." (Jim Hynes, makingascene.org)

Tony Davis
The son and first child of internationally renowned trombonist, composer and educator Steve Davis and critically acclaimed pianist, composer and educator Mary DiPaola, Tony was presented with the recipe for artistic success from day one. A native of West Hartford, Connecticut, Tony played piano, several brass instruments and bass until the age of 14 when he first picked up the guitar. After coming upon the music of such iconic bluesmen as Robert Johnson, Albert King, Buddy Guy and Jimi Hendrix, Davis knew he had officially begun the journey to finding his own musical identity.

Davis initially attended Roger Williams University with aspirations of pursuing a degree in psychology, but quickly realized that music was his calling. He then transferred to The Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz (Hartford, CT) where he had the opportunity to study with Nat Reeves, Eric McPherson, Abraham Burton, Rene McLean, Javon Jackson, his father and many other world-class musicians. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies (Summa Cum Laude) and then relocated to New York City, where he currently resides. Davis received a Master of Music Degree on scholarship at The City College of New York, where he studied with such contemporary masters as guitarists Peter Bernstein and Paul Bollenback, and saxophonist Steve Wilson. In addition to Bernstein & Bollenback, Tony has been mentored by a variety of prominent guitarists, including Russell Malone, Bobby Broom, Dave Stryker and Rich Goldstein.

Tony Davis continues to perform at NYC’s most notable venues such as SMOKE, Ginny’s Supper Club, Smalls & Mezzrow Jazz Clubs, Fat Cat, Minton’s Playhouse and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola/Jazz at Lincoln Center. Appearances outside of NYC include The Side Door Jazz Club (CT), The Jazz Kitchen (IN) and Infinity Hall (CT), as well as The Wes Montgomery Tribute Festival (IN), The Tri-C Jazz Festival (OH), The Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz (CT), The Newport Jazz Festival (RI) and The Center City Jazz Festival of Philadelphia (PA). He has shared the bandstand with heavyweights, including Harold Mabern, Larry Willis, Steve Wilson, Antoine Roney, Mike LeDonne, John Lee, Eric Alexander, JD Allen, Joe Farnsworth, Ugonna Okegwo, Anthony Wonsey and Dezron Douglas.

As as an educator, Davis’ experience includes work at various esteemed institutions including the Artist’s Collective (Hartford), NYC Piano Doctor and concerts/master classes with The Newport Jazz Assembly. He also runs his own private studio where he teaches students of all ages and levels.
