Info for Transfigurations: Schönberg - Berg

Schoenberg’s famous Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), inspired by Richard Dehmel’s poem in which a woman announces to her companion that she is pregnant by another man, is presented here in its version for piano trio by Eduard Steuermann: ‘This brilliant pianist, the creator of many of Schoenberg’s pieces, brings the story to life by entrusting the dialogue between the man and the woman to cello and violin alone’, says Thomas Dieltjens, pianist of the group Het Collectief. Anton Webern made a transcription of Schoenberg’s Kammersymphonie op.9 in 1923 for the same forces as Pierrot Lunaire . This miniature orchestra, consisting of just two wind instruments (flute, clarinet), two string instruments (violin, cello) and a piano, ‘preserves great clarity in the polyphonic line’. Het Collectif asked the young composer Tim Mulleman to transcribe for the same ensemble the Piano Sonata op.1 of Alban Berg, who himself made arrangements of some of his own works, including the famous Adagio from his Kammerkonzert , also presented in this programme.

Het Collectief

Het Collectief
is an ensemble of chamber musicians founded in 1998 in Brussels. Comprising a core group of five musicians, the group has developed an instantly recognisable ensemble sound, characterised by an unusual mix of wind instruments (flute and clarinet), strings (violin and cello) and piano. In its repertoire, Het Collectief goes back to the sources of modernism, namely the Second Viennese School. Building on this solid foundation, Het Collectief explores the significant works of the twentieth century, without shying away from the more recent experimental trends. The group also distinguishes itself by its cross-overs between contemporary and traditional music and its adaptations of early music.

Julien Hervé
Born in 1980, Julien HERVÉ is a prize-winner in clarinet and chamber music at the C.N.S.M. in Paris. Named "Classical Revelation of the Year 2005" by ADAMI, 3rd Prize at the Tokyo International Clarinet Competition in 2007, he studied with Pascal Moraguès, Richard Vieille, Michel Lethiec, Paul Meyer, Alain Damiens, Jean-François Verdier and Jean-Noël Crocq.

Passionate about chamber music, he founded the Capriccioso ensemble in 2003, with which he won the Grand Prix of the Krakow International Competition and recorded his first CD, dedicated to the music of Nicolas Bacri, which was nominated in 2007 by the Victoires de la Musique Classique. Sensitive to the cultural precariousness in many public establishments, he founded the Intermèdes association in 2001, which brings together musicians from the Paris Conservatory who want to bring music to places where it is not very present. Each year, some twenty concerts are organised in various chamber ensembles, from solo to small orchestra, for sick children at Necker and other departments in the hospitals of the Assistance Publique.

Martijn Vink
studied cello, attended master classes and studied chamber music at the European Mozart Academy in Prague under the artistic direction of Sandor Vegh. He has been performing chamber music since 1993. In addition to his ongoing engagements with the ensembles Oxalys and Het Collective, he has also performed with various groups throughout Europe. He has collaborated in numerous dance and musical theatre productions and with Viviane de Muynck performed the duet piece The Sound of Time. In addition to his musical training, he studied psychology at the University of Utrecht, where he graduated in 1993. Since 2006 Martijn has been teaching cello at the Utrecht Conservatory.

Thomas Dieltjens
teaches piano at the Stedelijk Conservatorium in Leuven. Since October 1992, he has also been professor of chamber music and accompanist to the class of I. Oistrach at the Royal Conservatory in Leuven. Oistrach's class at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Thomas Dieltjens performs as a soloist, in piano recitals and in chamber music. Since 1998 Thomas Dieltjens has been pianist and artistic director of the ensemble Het Collectief. After a long series of successful concerts in Switzerland and abroad, this group gained international recognition in 2003 with its Schoenberg performances (CD Fuga Libera 504). He is also a regular duo with his brother Benjamin (CD Explicit! 01008) and the flutist Toon Fret (CD Explicit! 98002) and is regularly invited by ensembles

Wilbert Aerts
gives masterclasses in Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Hong Kong and Belgium. He is a member of the ensemble "Het Collectief", (Musician of the Year 2011 by Klara radio), and has recorded a dozen cds that have been acclaimed by the international press. Many works for solo violin have been dedicated to him and he has performed world premieres. Wibert Aerts has built up an international reputation in the modern and contemporary repertoire for solo violin. His first solo CD, "Violin Faces", with among others Berio's famous "Sequenza", was praised by the international press.
