Info for Beethoven: String Trios, Op. 9 Nos. 1-3

With its first of two GENUIN CDs, the Trio Boccherini proves that Beethoven's string trios are more than technical exercises by the composer along the way to writing quartets. Opus 9 is a rarely recorded and performed early work by the master, and yet they already reveal Beethoven in his entirety, as it were, in a tonally condensed form. The ensemble, comprising of members from three different continents, bring together diverse aspects of their musical experiences, culminating in this colorful yet unified interpretation.

Trio Boccherini

The Trio Boccherini
was formed in 2014 as a result of various evening sightreading sessions that frequent the Berlin music scene. Today they are recognized as one of the most dynamic groups of this constellation. Suyeon Kang, violin, Vicki Powell, viola, and Paolo Bonomini, cello are dedicated to rediscovering and performing the veritable treasure trove of over five hundred works written for string trio. Although it boasts some of the greatest masterpieces, it includes many works that, unfortunately, are neglected and unknown to the public. In doing so, they endeavor to continually develop an honest, original and unified perception across all musical genres.

Natives of three different continents, each member contributes various aspects of their diverse musical upbringings. This colorful array of musical vocabulary and expression, in amalgamation with their shared European training, culminates in their unique and raw interpretations.

The trio received important musical impulses from Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet), Hatto Beyerle, Günter Pichler (Alban Berg Quartet), and Johannes Meissl, and they are an alumnus of the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA, Austria). Their international concert activity includes appearances at Wigmore Hall, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the BachArchiv Leipzig, MITO SettembreMusica, the Flanders Festival Ghent and the Canberra International Music Festival. As individuals, they are highly in demand as chamber musicians and are also internationally active as soloists, orchestral leaders and pedagogues.

The Trio plays on a set of old Italian instruments courtesy of the Fondation Boubo Music (Switzerland): a violin by Nicola Amati, a viola by Michele Deconet and a cello by Andrea Guarneri. Additionally, Suyeon Kang plays on a modern violin built by Julia Maria Pasch, and Vicki Powell plays on a viola by Samuel Zygmuntowicz.
