Info for Schumann: Dichterliebe & Selected Songs

After two Schubert albums, Mauro Peter has now turned intensively to the songs of Robert Schumann – a composer no less dear to him than Franz Schubert. In 2012 he won the Schumann Competition in Zwickau. “It is young, it is lyrical,” tenor Mauro Peter explains his deep connection with Schumann’s Dichterliebe. “I can relate to these feelings because they are familiar to me. The music is full of emotion and so incredibly heartfelt at the same time.”

Born in Luzern (Switzerland), the young tenor Mauro Peter studied in Munich/Germany. He was winner of the first prize and the audience award at the 2012 International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau. He had a sensational debut in 2012 with Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin, accompanied by Helmut Deutsch, at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg. From that moment on he has been a regular guest at international concert halls and opera houses. Helmut Deutsch is one of the most sought-after pianists for chamber music and vocal accompaniment. He studied piano, composition, and musicology at the Vienna Music Academy, where he was awarded the Vienna Composition Prize. Here they join together to record 'A Poets Love' & selected music of Robert Schumann (1810-1856).

Mauro Peter
Born in Lucerne, Switzerland, Mauro Peter received his musical training with the Luzerner Singknaben, at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München with Fenna Kügel-Seifried, and in Helmut Deutsch's Lied class.

Mauro Peter made the beginning of his career as a member of the Bavarian Theatre Academy, working closely with the conductor Ulf Schirmer and the Munich Radio Orchestra. In 2012 he participated at the Young Singers Project of the Salzburg Festival under the baton of Ivor Bolton and attended master classes with Thomas Hampson and Michael Schade. In the same year the young tenor was the winner of Peter Schumann Competition in Zwickau, where he was awarded the 1st Prize and the Audience prize, 2012.

His extensive concert repertory includes Bach's Passions and CHRISTMAS ORATORIO, Handel's MESSIAH, Haydn's DIE SCHÖPFUNG, Mendelssohn’s ELIJAH, Puccini's MESSA DI GLORIA, Rossini's PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE and Richard Strauss' DEUTSCHE MOTETTE.

In May 2012, he made his successful debut as a lieder recitalist at the Schubertiade in Hohenems, performing DIE SCHÖNE MÜLLERIN with Helmut Deutsch which he also sang for a replacement at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg in September 2012, being introduced to an international audience. These recitals were followed by his debuts with the same program in Tokyo, Schloss Elmau, and at Schumannfest Bonn. The 2013/14 season includes recital debuts at Vienna’s Musikverein, London’s Wigmore Hall, and Antwerp’s De Singel as well as at the Zurich Opera. He returns to the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg and Hohenems and will sing Bach’s ST. MATTHEW PASSION under Nikolaus Harnoncourt at Vienna’s Musikverein, under William Christie at the KKL Lucerne, Bach’s cantatas at Vienna’s Konzerthaus, Bruckners f-minor Mass with Marc Albrecht in Ottobeuren as well as Beethovens c-major Mass with Fabio Luisi in Zürich.

In 2013, he made his debut as Knappe in Wagner’s PARSIFAL under Christian Thielemann at the Easter Festival in Salzburg as well as in the role of Tamino at Opéra de Lyon. He returned to the Salzburg Festival with Mozart’s C MINOR MASS under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, Handel’s ALEXANDER FEAST under Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Haydn’s IL RITORNO DI TOBIA under Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

From the 2013/14 season onwards, he will be a member of the Zürich Opera House, where he will sing Jaquino in Beethoven’s FIDELIO under Fabio Luisi and Eurimacho in IL RITORNO D’ULISSE IN PATRIA under Ivor Bolton among others. His upcoming operatic engagements include his debuts as Ferrando in COSI FAN TUTTE and Don Ottavio in DON GIOVANNI, both in a concert version at the Theater an der Wien under Harnoncourt, Apollo in Monteverdi’s ORFEO at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich under Ivor Bolton and the title role in Mozart’s IL RE PASTORE in a concert version at the Komische Oper Berlin.
