It is incredible that this is the first recording of Symphonies Nos 1 & 3, considering that Taneyev was such a major figure in late-nineteenth-century Russia. He was a student of Tchaikovsky and actually dared criticise his teacher for dragging ballet into the genre of the symphony. Over the years Valeri Polyansky and the Russian State Symphony Orchestra have championed the works of Taneyev and his contemporaries, and the music is in their blood.
