The Nefertiti Quartet takes its name from the composition of Wayne Shorter, the musical poet whose dreams find expression in improbably shaped melodic lines.

Delphine Deau takes up this idea in her passion for working on the form of compositions. The group she formed in 2013 from musicians she had met at the CRR Paris Conservatoire may look like a classical jazz quartet, and indeed they are excellent musicians, but appearances are deceptive. We couldn't be further away from the endless repetitions of "melody - improvised solos - melody again" here.

In Nefertiti, Delphine uses a completely different dramaturgy. The form only emerges when it has to, after previous frolicking and shadow play. Then, and only then, does the composition move forward. In a paradoxical and very delightful way, this is liberating. For once the free sounds have built up their own tension, the arrival of melody and pulse brings security - and yet the line has the freedom to zigzag, swirl and be peppered with polyrhythms.

The lyrical playing of saxophonist Camille Maussion ideally complements and extends the concept of this wonderful pianist. It is no coincidence that the saxophonist is also involved in "sound painting" and collaborates in the fields of dance, theatre and storytelling. Drummer Pierre Demange is another musician with similar inclinations, familiar with both the film and circus worlds. His way of working with the wonderfully flexible Brazilian double bass player Pedro Ivo Ferreira often seems as if they had discovered the secret of perpetual motion together.

After two albums, 2015's "Danses Futuristes" and 2018's "Morse Code", the band has developed its collective sound, a process deepened by its many tours. The Nefertiti Quartet won the Euroradio Jazz Competition 2019 (Pierre Demange also won the prize for best soloist).

Nefertiti Quartet

Nefertiti Quartet
is about a passion for working on the form of compositions. This quartet of superb players was formed by pianist Delphine Deau in 2013, and her pieces have a compelling dramaturgy. The pulse and the melodic line only emerge after joyous free interchange, frolicking and shadowplay. Saxophonist Camille Maussion is a melodic player who is involved in ‘soundpainting,’ and also collaborates in the fields of dance, theatre and storytelling. He extends Deau’s concept and complements her lyrical playing in an ideal way. Drummer Pierre Demange also works in other art forms, notably the film and circus worlds. His mode of working with the wonderfully flexible Brazilian double bassist Pedro Ivo Ferreira often feels like they have together discovered the secret of perpetual motion.

The masterful interplay of the four musicians of this gender-equal unit contained all achievements of modern North American jazz in a highly developed manner and offered highly precise soloing. - Henning Bolte (All About Jazz)
