Info for Encaenia Musices

Musical Feast, Encaenia Musices, is the name Romanus Weichlein chose for his Opus 1 collection of twelve sonatas, published in 1695. In its preface Romanus Weichlein states that he composed the pieces ‘for the ear, rather than for the eye’, and that the musicians should feel free to shorten, lengthen and rearrange them as desired. The sonatas are in the style typically found in Austria at the time: freely composed violin and trumpet lines above an ostinato baseline emerging as a virtuosic baroque musical feast.

Romanus Weichlein was born into a family of musicians in Linz, given the name Andreas Franz Weichlein. Upon entering the Monastery at Lambach he took up Romanus as his monk’s name. The CD cover of this brilliantly performed recording by capella vitalis berlin presents the family shield of the Abbot Severin Blass, to whom the Weichlein dedicated his Canon on the Posthorn, for four violins. This canon is found today preserved in the monastery on a copperplate, and provides a light interlude and addition to the sonatas of Encaenia Musices.

capella vitalis berlin
was founded with the idea of bringing a new and interesting sound-body into Berlin’s musical life. Its motto is to revitalize the music of the 17th / 18th centuries and to let forgotten works be heard once more.

Founded by the baroque violinists Almut Schlicker and Ulrike Wildenhof in 2002 – the ensemble consists of well-known professional musicians, all of whom have dedicated themselves to historical performance practice and have met mostly in chamber music contexts. They are a flexible formation ranging from baroque sonata/trio sonata up to full classical or romantic orchestra.

The group has a reputation for lively musical presentation accompanied by a harmonious atmosphere within the group. capella vitalis berlin is often a welcome guest and has performed in festivals in London, Spain, Denmark, Norway as well as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.

Another place in the ensemble’s calendar is given to regular cooperation with professional and non- professional choirs.

Often the question: ‘do you have a CD?’ has been asked. With Encaenia Musices this longstanding wish has been granted.
