Info for Tchaikovsky: Ballet Suites & Waltzes for Orchestra

During the heyday of classical ballet in Saint Petersburg in the second half of the 19th century, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote ballet music for the Mariinsky Theater and the Moscow Bolshoi Theater. The result is works that are now part of the repertoire of every classical ballet company, for example, Swan Lake (1877), Sleeping Beauty (1890), and The Nutcracker (1892).

Swan Lake was the first ballet score to be created by a symphonic composer.

Suites derived from ballet became very popular. There are different versions of these suites in which the order and the movements used vary.

This album consists of Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake Suite," including the rarely played "Russian dance."

The composer also selected eight of the numbers from the ballet before the ballet's December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, intended for concert performance.

Under Maestro Volker Hartung, the Cologne New Philharmonic presents Tchaikovsky's suites and waltzes from his other works in thrilling performances, recorded in the gorgeous acoustics of Hamburg's Laeiszhalle.
