The concerto, with its soloist thrilling and moving an audience with the support of an orchestra, has been one of the most popular musical forms for over 300 years. Now imagine a concerto for two instruments: twice the virtuosity and twice the expression!

While Antonio Vivaldi was one of the first composers to investigate the possibilities of this format in his more than 500 concertos, he didn’t compose a single one for double bass. This recording rectifies Vivaldi’s omission and offers arrangements of two of his double concertos as well as one of his best-loved arias: Vedrò con mio diletto from the opera Il Giustino. A little more than a century later, Giovanni Bottesini, the Paganini of the double bass, captivated first Europe and then the rest of the world, displaying a dazzling virtuosity in his numerous compositions that highlight the unique qualities of the instrument.

For his second disc on the BIS label, Rick Stotijn, a tireless advocate of his instrument and its endless possibilities, has joined forces with his friends Johannes Rostamo, Olivier Thiery and Bram van Sambeek. Supported by Camerata RCO, a string ensemble from the Amsterdam Concertgebouworkest, they perform concertante works from these two Italian composers: Doppio espressivo!

Rick Stotijn
is a tireless advocate of his instrument and its endless possibilities, and has collaborated with composers such as Louis Andriessen, Michel van der Aa, Martijn Padding, Jesper Nordin and Britta Byström. A varied discography includes works by composers ranging from Bottesini to Piazzolla, and on BIS he appears on recordings with two innovative ensembles of which he is co-founder: the Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble and ORBI. Rick Stotijn studied the double bass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, continuing his studies at the Freiburg Hochschule für Musik. He has won several competitions and is the recipient of the prestigious Dutch Music Prize.

As a soloist he performs with orchestras such as the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Residentie Orkest The Hague, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Scottish Ensemble. He is currently principal bass player in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Mahler Chamber Orchestra, having held the same position with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Rick Stotijn is a regular guest at festivals such as the Delft Chamber Music Festival, the International Chamber Music Festival in Utrecht and the Lucerne Festival, where he is also principal bass in the festival orchestra. He is professor of double bass at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf.

Bram van Sambeek
is known for his highly versatile approach to bassoon playing and for his innovative programming. A dedicated chamber musician, he is a regular guest at prestigious festivals as well as a founding member of the group ORBI (the Oscillating Revenge of the Background Instruments), performing tailor-made arrangements of rock songs. Bram van Sambeek is the only bassoonist to have received the Dutch Music Prize. For ten years he was principal bassoonist in the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and he has been a regular guest principal in the London Symphony Orchestra and Mahler

Chamber Orchestra. Having held a professorship at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln for four years, Bram van Sambeek currently teaches at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. As a soloist he appears with orchestras such as the Gothenburg, Lahti and Netherlands Symphony Orchestras.

Olivier Thiery
received his first double bass lessons from his father Georges Thiery at the age of fifteen. After graduating from the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany, he moved to Amsterdam and a post as permanent member with the Concertgebouworkest. In 2009 he was a prizewinner at the 58th ARD International Music Competition in Munich. In addition to his commitment to Camerata RCO, Olivier Thiery performs in recital and chamber music at festivals across Europe, such as those in West Cork, Schiermonnikoog, Kempten and Wassenaar, alongside partners including Alexei

Ogrintchouk, Emmanuel Pahud, Daishin Kashimoto, Anthony Marwood and Lise Berthaud. Since 2014 Olivier Thiery has taught at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
