Between 1934 and 1949, Allan Pettersson, one of Sweden’s foremost composers of symphonies, wrote chamber works that differ greatly from his later production. With his Two Elegies, composed at the tender age of 17, Pettersson drew the enthusiasm of his teacher, who saw in him the makings of a composer. The Four Improvisations for string trio recall Bartók’s music with their rhythmic vitality. The Andante espressivo is more personal with its experimental melodic and harmonic leanings. After his forced return from Paris in 1939, where he had gone to study, Pettersson composed a tender and lyrical Romanza and, three years later, his only piece for solo piano, the elegiac and meditative Lamento.

The most important work on this recording is the Concerto for Violin and String Quartet, a harsh, dense work that places great demands on the musicians. Initially rejected by the critics, the work now appears almost unique in terms of its radical tonal language and experimental use of extended techniques.

For this recording, Ulf Wallin has brought together colleagues and friends to perform these lesser-known works, which nevertheless constitute an essential milestone in the career of the great Swedish composer.

Der schwedische Geiger Ulf Wallin studierte an der Königlichen Musikhochschule in Stockholm bei Prof. Sven Karpe und später an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien bei Wolfgang Schneiderhan.

Ulf Wallin widmet sich der Solo- wie der Kammermusikliteratur mit der gleichen Hingabe. Konzertreisen haben ihn durch ganz Asien, Europa und die USA geführt, wobei er unter Dirigenten wie Jesús López Cobos, Manfred Honeck, Paavo Järvi, Andrew Manze, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Walter Weller und Franz Welser-Möst gespielt hat. Kammermusikpartner unter anderem von Bruno Canino, Barbara Hendricks, Heinz Holliger, Roland Pöntinen und András Schiff.

Ulf Wallin ist regelmäßig bei international renommierten Festivals zu Gast, wie den Luzern Festival, Berliner Festwochen, den Musiktagen Mondsee, der Schubertiade Feldkirch, dem Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Festival Pablo Casals de Prades und dem Marlboro Music Festival.

Er ist auf bedeutenden Konzertpodien aufgetreten wie Berliner Philharmonie, La Scala di Milano, Théatre des Champs-Elysées Paris, Wigmore Hall, Wiener Musikverein.

Sein reges Interesse an zeitgenössischer Musik hat zu einer engen Zusammenarbeit mit bedeutenden Komponisten wie Anders Eliasson, Alfred Schnittke and Rodion Shchedrin geführt.

Er hat zahlreiche Aufnahmen für Rundfunk und Fernsehen gemacht. Seine Produktionen mit über 50 CD-Aufnahmen (BIS, cpo, EMI und BMG), haben große Anerkennung und Aufmerksamkeit in den internationalen Medien gefunden.

Ulf Wallin ist Professor an der Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ in Berlin und Gastprofessor an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien. Er ist Jurymitglied bedeutender Wettbewerbe wie dem Internationalen Musikwettbewerb der ARD in München, Internationalen Joseph Joachim Violinwettbewerb in Hannover sowie Internationalen Fritz Kreisler Violinwettbewerb in Wien.

2013 wurde er mit dem Robert-Schumann-Preis der Stadt Zwickau ausgezeichnet. 2014 wurde er zum Mitglied der Königlichen Schwedischen Musikakademie ernannt.

Ulf Wallin spielt eine Violine von dem venezianischen Meister Domenico Montagnana aus dem Jahr 1746.
