Info for Brahms: Symphony No. 2, Op. 73 & Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56a

Six years after the Tonkünstler Orchestra and Andres Orozco-Estrada released their complete recording of the Brahms symphonies, the Tonkünstler now return to Brahms – under the baton of Yutaka Sado. As a Viennese orchestra with a musical tradition dating back over a century, the Tonkünstler Orchestra plays on Viennese instruments. Johannes Brahms’s life story was also closely associated with Vienna. In 1862 he finally moved permanently to the metropolis on the Danube, where he would die in 1897. On 30 December 1877, his Second Symphony was performed here. A serene work, more lyrical than his dramatic First Symphony, the Second is a reflection of the landscape around the Worthersee lake, where Brahms had composed it in the summer before the premiere. A few years before, in the archive of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien, he had stumbled upon the «Chorale St. Antoni», the magical theme from Haydn’s Divertimento in B flat major for eight wind instruments. The eight orchestral variations by Brahms with their magnificent passacaglia at the end, which Brahms had composed in 1873 and named Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, also helped bring great fame to the chamber piece that was their source.
