Man kann nicht Nu Groove sagen, ohne Burrell zu erwähnen. Das bahnbrechende New Yorker House-Label, das von 1988 bis 1992 existierte, stand an der Spitze eines Sounds, der sowohl traditionell als auch im Umbruch war. Seit der Schließung der Paradise Garage 1987 und bevor der "NYC-House-Sound" klar definiert und eingezäunt war, war Nu Groove ein Kaleidoskop und eine Verschmelzung von allem, was ihn bis dahin geprägt hatte: Uptempo-R&B, Reggae, Dub, Disco, Freestyle, Techno, Jazz und der von Larry Heard in Chicago geprägte Sound, der im Big Apple so gut ankam, was auch immer. Ronald und Rheji Burrell schufen die Basis, den ersten Stock und das Dach.
