Schätze aus dem Archiv: „Release Me 2“ ist das erste neue Barbra Streisand-Album seit „Walls“ von 2018 und die zweite Ausgabe von Barbra Streisand-Raritäten, ein zeitgemäßes Pendant zu ihrem äußerst erfolgreichen Columbia/Legacy-Album „Release Me“ von 2012, das auf Platz 7 der Billboard 200 Charts einstieg und damit ihr 32. Top-10-Album und ihr siebtes Top-10-Album in Folge wurde.

Als Vorbote von „Release Me 2“ wurde "I'd Want It To Be You" - Barbras unwiderstehliches Duett mit Willie Nelson - über alle digitalen Anbieter zusammen mit einem Lyric-Video veröffentlicht. Der Song war ursprünglich für „Partners“, ihr 2014 erschienenes Album mit Duetten mit männlichen Superstars, vorgesehen. Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Barbra Streisand und Willie Nelson konnte damals nicht vor dem Veröffentlichungstermin beendet werden. Produziert von Walter Afanasieff & Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds wurde "I'd Want It To Be You" 2014 und 2020 aufgenommen.

„Release Me 2“ bietet exquisite Songs und erhabene Studio-Performances, die im Laufe von Barbras erstaunlicher Karriere aufgenommen, aber aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht zur Veröffentlichung kamen. In ihren eigenen Notizen zum Album sagt Barbra: "Für mich ist das Studio eine Kombination aus musikalischem Spielplatz und Laboratorium ... ein privates Heiligtum, in dem immer die Möglichkeit besteht, einen Blitz in einer Flasche zu fangen. Wann immer diese Art von Magie passiert, ist das ein extrem befriedigender Moment. Manchmal jedoch, wenn das Arrangement nicht so recht funktioniert oder der Song nicht mehr zum Klang des Albums passt, für das er gedacht war, wandern die Bänder zur sicheren Aufbewahrung in den Tresor. Die Arbeit an dieser zweiten Ausgabe von `Release Me´ war ein schöner Spaziergang in die Vergangenheit ... eine Chance, Songs, die für mich immer noch bedeutungsvoll sind, wieder aufleben zu lassen und ihnen in einigen Fällen den letzten Schliff zu geben. Besonders beeindruckt bin ich z.B. von der anhaltenden Relevanz, die "Be Aware" und "One Day" zeigen und unseren kollektiven Sinn für Menschlichkeit ansprechen."

Während ihrer gesamten Karriere war Barbras leidenschaftliches soziales Engagement eine treibende Kraft in ihrer Kunst und ihrem Leben. Ihre Darbietungen von "Be Aware" und "One Day (A Prayer)" berühren den Kern der menschlichen Existenz. Geschrieben von Burt Bacharach und Hal David als Antwort auf die Notlage des Welthungers und obdachloser Kinder, wurde "Be Aware" im Studio aufgenommen, um ein Arrangement für Barbras Auftritt im Fernsehspecial "Singer Presents Burt Bacharach" 1971 zu erstellen. Produziert von Burt Bacharach & Barbra Streisand wurde "Be Aware" im Jahr 1971 und 2020 aufgenommen.

Mit einer Melodie von Michel Legrand und einem Text von Alan Bergman und Marilyn Bergman ist "One Day (A Prayer)" eine beschwörende, hoffnungsvolle Botschaft des Friedens. Barbra nahm den Song bei drei verschiedenen Gelegenheiten in den Jahren 1968-69 auf, jeweils mit einem anderen Arrangeur. Alle drei Versionen wurden im Tresor archiviert, bis 1990 eine Rohmischung des Don Costa-Arrangements in der Sendung „The Earth Day Special“ (ABC) ausgestrahlt wurde, mit einem Video, in dem Barbra den Song performte. „Release Me 2“ präsentiert das Don Costa Arrangement dieser glorreichen Hymne mit dem fertigen Mix, den der Song immer verdient hat. Produziert von Barbra Streisand & Wally Gold wurde "One Day (A Prayer)" im Jahr 1968 aufgenommen.

„Release Me 2“ enthält Songs von berühmten Songschreibern und Komponisten wie Burt Bacharach und Hal David, Barry Gibb, Randy Newman, Michel Legrand/Alan Bergman/Marilyn Bergman, Harold Arlen und "Yip" Harburg, Carole King, Steve Dorff, Paul Williams/Kenny Ascher und Walter Afanasieff/John Bettis.

Zusätzlich zu ihrem Duett mit Willie Nelson singt Barbra auf „Release Me 2“ mit Muppet-Superstar Kermit dem Frosch auf der klassischen Komposition "Rainbow Connection" (ursprünglich für Barbras „Wet“-Album im Jahr 1979 vorgesehen). Weiterhin gibt es eine Zusammenarbeit mit Barry Gibb auf "If Only You Were Mine", das von Barry Gibb/Ashley Gibb/Stephen Gibb als potenzieller Bonustrack für das 2005er Album „Guilty Pleasures“ geschrieben wurde.

Weitere Highlights auf „Release Me 2“ sind Barbras Interpretation von Carole Kings "You Light Up My Life", einem Song von Kings „Fantasy“-Album aus dem Jahr 1973, den Barbra 1974 für eine mögliche Aufnahme in ihr „Butterfly“ Album aufnahm, die Walter Afanasieff/John Bettis-Komposition "Sweet Forgiveness", eine schwebende emotionale Ballade und Barbras herzzerreißende Interpretation von Randy Newmans "Living Without You", die ursprünglich 1971 für Barbras Album „Stoney End“ vorgesehen war.

Die früheste Studioaufnahme auf „Release Me 2“ ist Barbras glühende Interpretation von "Right As The Rain", einer eleganten Ballade aus der Feder von Harold Arlen und E.Y. "Yip" Harburg ("Over The Rainbow") für das Broadway-Musical "Bloomer Girl" von 1944. Das Album endet mit "Once You've Been In Love", einer Michel Legrand/Alan Bergman/Marilyn Bergman-Komposition, die in eine atemberaubende, einmalige “Tour de Force“ verwandelt wurde, eine Live-Aufnahme im Studio, bei der Barbra direkt vor dem Orchester singt. She has achieved 51 Gold, 30 Platinum and 18 multi-Platinum albums, each of which, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, exceeds all other female singers. Her most recent GRAMMY® nominated album, What Matters Most, and Release Me became her 31st and 32nd to reach the Top Ten in the charts, with which she passed The Beatles to become the third highest achiever in that significant statistic, exceeded only by the Rolling Stones and Frank Sinatra. She is the only female among the top ten album-selling recording artists and also the only one to have done so in the pop music field during decades dominated by rock and country sales dominance. About Funny Girl:

The musical by librettist Isobel Lennart, composer Jule Styne (Gypsy, Bells Are Ringing) and lyricist Bob Merrill (Carnival, New Girl in Town) depicted the rise to fame of comedienne/Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice (Streisand, in her second Broadway role) and her troubled relationship with husband Nicky Arnstein (Sydney Chaplin, son of Charlie and star of Styne’s Bells Are Ringing and Subways Are For Sleeping). Kay Medford and Danny Meehan also starred as Mrs. Brice and Eddie Ryan, respectively, and future All in the Family “Dingbat” Jean Stapleton was featured as Mrs. Strakosh. Funny Girl, directed by Garson Kanin and produced by Brice’s son-in-law Ray Stark, opened on March 26, 1964 after 17 previews at the Winter Garden Theatre (today, home to the musical Rocky). It then transferred to two more theaters before closing in 1967 after 1,348 performances; Mimi Hines succeeded Streisand as Fanny.

The show earned eight Tony nominations, but won none of them thanks to the unstoppable competition from David Merrick’s production of Hello, Dolly!. Streisand would be awarded for her portrayal of Fanny, however, when she won Golden Globe and Academy Awards for the 1968 film version. It would be her first role in a film. The musical produced a number of standards, including “I’m The Greatest Star,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and, of course, “People,” not to mention one of the most electrifying overtures ever composed.

The original cast album, one of Streisand’s only recordings not on Columbia Records, was recorded over just one session (as was standard practice at the time) at the Manhattan Center studios on April 5, 1964 and was produced by Dick Jones. Longtime Broadway champion Goddard Lieberson, the president of Columbia, reportedly passed on the cast album but made a stipulation that Streisand record a number of songs from the score for Columbia which she did in December of that year. (Two – “Who Are You Now” and “Cornet Man” – still remain locked in the Columbia vaults.) Lieberson might have rethought his passing on the album if he could have foreseen its success. In stores just a scant week after it was recorded, it went on to spend 51 weeks on the Billboard chart. It peaked at No. 2, kept from pole position only by The Beatles’ Second Album (illuminating how much the charts have changed over 50 years!). The Original Broadway Cast Recording of Funny Girl would eventually be certified Gold in September of 1964 and go on to win the Grammy for Best Original Cast Album. It was released on CD in 1987 on Capitol and in 1992 on EMI’s Broadway Angel Label, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004.
