Eric Clapton rekrutierte im Frühsommer 1970 sein (leider) kurzlebiges Bandprojekt aus Musikern der US-Studioszene und Kollegen, die er bereits seit seinem Gastspiel bei 'Delaney & Bonnie & Friends' kannte. Er hatte gerade sein erstes Soloalbum fertig gestellt und suchte wieder die Geborgenheit einer Rockband, bei der er allerdings erstmals als Frontmann (Leadsänger und Gitarrist) auftrat.
'Derek & The Dominoes' existierten nicht einmal ein Jahr, realisierten aber in dieser eher knappen Zeit zwei Doppelalben, eine US-Tournee und eine Clubtour durch England.
Am 23. und 24. Oktober 1970 gastierte das Quartett im New Yorker 'Fillmore East' und stellte aus den Mitschnitten der jeweils zweiten Show am Abend eine außergewöhnliche Live-Platte zusammen, die sich vor allem durch ihren Jam-Charakter und das damit verbundene große improvisatorische Können der handelnden Akteure auszeichnet.
