Vor zwölf Jahren galt Conor Oberst aus Omaha, Nebraska als Heilsbringer des Alternative Rock. Es schien ausgemacht, dass der bald groß werden würde, Rockstar-groß. Geschätzte 20 Veröffentlichungen später ist er einer, der im Mainstream doch nicht die Rolle spielt, die ihm zugedacht war. Vielleicht ist das ein Glücksfall. Das Werk Obersts ist unübersichtlich, bevorratet aber viele große Gefühle.

Die überraschendsten sind die Wut, die das Debüt seiner Punk-Band Desaparecidos (2002) transportiert und der Humor, mit dem er in Jenny Lewis’ Travelling-Wilburys-Cover „Handle With Care“ (2005) ein paar Strophen beisteuert. Bekannt ist Oberst für einen anderen Klang, und da sind wir bei „Upside Down Mountain“, dem sechsten Album, das er unter eigenem Namen veröffentlicht: Hier zieht Oberst an jenen Reglern, die das Gros seiner Musik ausmachen, übt sich in einem Mix aus Folk, Country und Soul, der so abgefedert, so entspannt wirkt, als habe er alle Zeit der Welt.

Die Gitarre weint wunderbare Soli, dazu singt Oberst von der Freiheit, und davon, dass diese das Gegenteil von Liebe sei und jene sich wiederum durch das völlige Fehlen von Würde auszeichne („Lonely At The Top“), zärtelt sich aber an anderer Stelle durch Zeilen wie „Tears will dry if you give them time. Life’s a Rollercoaster, keep your arms inside“ („You Are Your Mother’s Child“). Da reicht die Akustik-Gitarre. Einige Momente später, in „Governor’s Ball“ ist plötzlich alles laut, alles grell, alles glitzernd. Die Orgel spielt zur Hohen Messe, die Bläser sind messerscharf. Vermutlich ist das Jazzrock, vielleicht Southern Rock, auf jeden Fall ist es: hervorragend.

Conor Oberst
joined his first band at the age of 13 and has been releasing music since 1993. Over the next two plus decades, he’s released cassette-only recordings, split 7-inches, and a dozen albums of uncommon insight, detail, and political awareness with his band Bright Eyes, under his own name, as a member of Desaparecidos, as leader of the The Mystic Valley Band, and with the Monsters of Folk supergroup.

I have always believed there’s salvation through music and love. At least for me. It’s gotten me through the worst of things. But I want it to be that way for the people who listen to it, too,” explains Oberst. “I feel I always make an attempt, even when writing what is a pretty depressing number, to sew some silver lining into it. I think the secret to happiness is making yourself believe that happiness is possible. The first step in overcoming anything is to believe that you can do it. So in my songs there’s always a point where something pulls you out of the hole you’re in” (Jaan Uhelszki)
