Welcome to our trio’s third recording! To mark the occasion, we wished to reconnect with a leading figure of the music world whom we have always held dear, a poet of endless inspiration who grew into a prominent craftsman through sheer hard work: we are of course referring to Antonín Dvořák.

We sincerely hope that you will be as delighted as we are by the variety of moods and tones in Dvořák’s music, which remains so moving in its spontaneity and its sincerity! It is the reflection of a simple man, whose strong will and sense of direction render him incorruptible, but who nevertheless spent his whole life observing the world with a child-like verve.

Truly, Dvořák’s music is so touching because it tells us, quite simply, what it means to live: to dance, to sing, to laugh, to cry... Through the works that make up Bohemian Rhapsodies shines a man with a passionate love of nature, his Czech heritage, the latest innovations of his time, the affection for his family, the company of friends…

Although Dvořák built up his own legend, it was under the influence of an ancient Czech legend, reinterpreted by the poet Julius Zeyer, that Josef Suk composed the Elegy which closes the present record. A natural way of bringing these Bohemian Rhapsodies full circle.

Bohemian Rhapsodies: In many ways, the trajectory of Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s career can be likened to an astonishing success story. In typical self-made man fashion, he managed to build himself up from nothing and, quite literally, conquer America. Even the most fervent clairvoyant would not have dared to predict that the penniless child of an anonymous butcher, born in the Prague countryside in 1841 would take New York City by storm 52 years later. Indeed, his New World Symphony made him so famous that a great quantity of merchandise bearing his name could be found displayed in shop windows all around New York!

If Dvořák’s success is mainly due to his exceptional perseverance and stubbornness, the alignment of a few stars surely facilitated the emergence of this formidable talent. First of all, young Antonin clearly grew up in a fertile environment, his own father playing the zither at home. Richard Wagner once described 19th century Bohemia as “the land of the finest harp players and travelling singers”.

Bohemia was also home to the time-honoured tradition of Cantors, the schoolteacher-musicians who were active throughout the country. As well as teaching the young boy German – an indispensable tool to whoever aspired to upward mobility in Czech society under Habsburg rule – the schoolteachers and multiinstrumentalists Josef Spitz, Josef Toman and especially Antonín Liehmann would prove crucial in Dvořák’s introduction to music. ...

Trio Atanassov

Trio Atanassov
Das Trio Atanassov wurde 2007 von drei jungen Studierenden des Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) – Perceval Gilles (Violine), Sarah Sultan (Violoncello) und Pierre-Kaloyann Atanassov (Klavier) – gegründet. Seit 2008 ist das Trio Mitglied der European Chamber Music Academy und erhielt maßgebliche Einflüsse vom künstlerischen Leiter Hatto Beyerle. Das Trio Atanassov konzertiert regelmäßig in Frankreich sowie in Europa. Das breite Repertoire des Trios reicht von den Kompositionen Haydns bis zu Werken des 21. Jahrhunderts. Neben einer regen Konzerttätigkeit nahm das Trio bei internationalen Wettbewerben in Osaka, in Trondheim sowie beim Haydn-Wettbewerb in Wien, dem „Joseph-Joachim“-Kammermusikwettbewerb in Weimar und dem Vibrarte und FNAPEC Wettbewerb in Paris teil. 2010 wurde das Trio beim „International Commerzbank Chamber Music Competition“ in Frankfurt am Main mit dem 1. Preis ausgezeichnet. 2013 hat das Trio seine erste CD (Piano Trios op. 15 & op. 65 von Dvořák und Smetana, Hänssler Classic) veröffentlicht, welche von der französischen Musikjournale mit dem „Diapason d’Or“ ausgezeichnet worden ist.

Pierre-Kaloyann Atanassov
wurde 1983 geboren und erhielt seinen ersten Klavierunterricht im Alter von drei Jahren. Ein Jahr später folgte der Violinunterricht. 2003 begann er sein Studium am Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (CNSMDP) bei Brigitte Engerer und Alain Planès, welches er 2007 mit Auszeichnung abschloss. Weitere musikalische Eindrücke sammelte er in Meisterklassen von György Sebök, Sergio Perticaroli, Bruno Rigutto, Klaus Hellwig, Jean-François Heisser und Muza Rubackyt. Atanassov tritt seit seinem 16. Lebensjahr erfolgreich als Solist sowie als Kammermusiker mit dem Trio Atanassov in Frankreich und Europa auf.

Perceval Gilles
wurde 1987 geboren und erhielt seinen ersten Musikunterricht im Alter von sechs Jahren bei seinem Vater am Montpellier Conservatoire. 2003 schloss er das Studium im Fach Violine und Kammermusik mit Auszeichnung ab. Ab 2004 besuchte er die Violinklasse von Olivier Charlier und Joanna Matkowska am Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (CNSMDP). Im Mai 2008 schloss er seine Ausbildung mit Auszeichnung ab und erhielt den ersten Preis sowie einen Sonderpreis für seine Interpretation von Berios „Sequenza“ für Solovioline. Neben seinen solistischen Auftritten mit den verschiedenen Orchestern ist Gilles als Kammermusiker mit dem Trio Atanassov auf den europäischen Bühnen präsent.

Sarah Sultan
Ihren ersten Violoncellounterricht erhielt Sultan bei Claude Zanotti in Angers (Frankreich) und wechselte anschließend an das Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (CNSMDP) zu Michel Strauss. 2006 schloss sie ihre Ausbildung mit Auszeichnung ab. Im Zuge eines Austauschprogrammes erhielt sie Unterricht bei Richard Aaron am Cleveland Institute of Music und nahm an Meisterkursen bei Miklós Perényi, Sonia Wieder-Atherton, Peter Salaff, Christoph Henkel und Bernard Greenhouse teil. Von 2007 bis 2010 studierte Sultan bei Jean-Guihen Queyras an der Musikhochschule in Stuttgart. Neben ihrer solistischen und kammermusikalischen Tätigkeit gibt sie Cellounterricht und tritt regelmäßig mit dem Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France in Paris auf.
