By common critical consent, this is one of the late Woody Shaw's best albums, featuring a minor masterpiece of trumpet improvisation on 'Sippin' At Bells'. This recording, made in 1987, was the first to be released by IN + OUT Records. Unhappily it proved to be Woody Shaw's last recording under his own name. He died following a tragic accident in New York on March 10th, 1989. Miles Davis described Shaw as a great player with his own original ideas. Woody once said, '100% of me goes into being a creative musician, because I want to contribute to this beautiful art form called jazz.' With 'In My Own Sweet Way', Woody Shaw has made a most memorable contribution to the art of jazz.

This late-period set for the German In & Out label (recorded only two years before his death) features Shaw with the Austrian drummer Alex Deutsch and a couple of talented Canadians: pianist Fred Henke and bassist Neil Swainson.
