Info zu Pablo Sorozábal Choral Works I

Trotz seiner großen Erfolge in der Opernszene blieb der in Donostia geborene und in Madrid verstorbene Pablo Sorozábal (1897-1988) der Chormusik während seiner gesamten Laufbahn eng verbunden. In den Reihen der lebendigen Chorbewegung seines Heimatlandes Baskenland nahm seine künstlerische Persönlichkeit Gestalt an, und auch seine Faszination für Gesang und Theater wurde deutlich.

So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass er einige seiner intimsten Seiten diesen Chören widmete und sie mit seinem Familienerbe verband. Sein Vater, von Beruf Steinmetz, war nämlich auch ein begabter Bertsolari, der seine Lieder in den Tavernen von San Sebastián vortrug. Von ihm erbte Sorozábal eine Sprache, das Baskische, die auf seinen Lippen wie Musik klang“, und eine tiefe Liebe zur Volksmusik.

Einer Überlieferung zufolge, die der Schriftsteller Bernardo Atxaga von seinem Urgroßvater überliefert hat, pfiffen Sorozábals Vorfahren, die aus dem Bauernhaus Portale im Dorf Larraul in der Nähe von Asteasu stammten, „besser als die Vögel“ („txoriek baino hobeto egiten diate txistu“)

Enrique Azurza
is one of the most outstanding and dynamic Spanish choral directors of his generation. In 1991 he received the Prize for Best Director at the Varna International Contest in Bulgaria. He directs the KEA vocal ensemble for contemporary music, the Choir of the University of the Basque Country, and the Coro Lírico in Cantabria. He also conducted the Hodeiertz Choir from 1995 until 2011. He studied choral conducting in Basque Country and Stockholm and teaches choir singing at Musikene, the College of Music of Basque Country. In 1996, together with the Hodeiertz Choir from Tolosa, Enrique Azurza participated in the 4th World Symposium on Choral Music held in Sydney, Australia. He was also the Spanish representative in the 9th World Symposium in Puerto Madryn, Argentina, 2011 with the Grupo Vocal KEA. He has taught numerous conducting courses and singing masterclasses, and serves as an advisor for the Tolosa International Choir Contest. He is regularly invited to participate at various national and international contests as juror.
