Ein Italiener im London des 17. Jahrhunderts: Matteis schrieb für das vom Bürgertum geprägte Musikleben Londons eine vielfältige Musik mit Einflüssen aus Italien, Frankreich und England. Das Ensemble „Theatrum affectuum“ präsentiert die zumeist kurzen Stücke aus Matteis' „Books of Ayres“ als funkelnden, facettenreichen Kosmos: virtuos oder intim, derb oder elegant, intelektuell oder geerdet, krachend oder lieblich...

Theatrum affectuum wählte die späteren Versionen der Stücke mit zweiter Oberstimme und führt sie mit Violine und Blockflöte aus, das Continuo besteht aus Cello, Laute und Cembalo bzw. Orgel.

Theatrum affectuum konzertiert seit 2003 zusammen in Europa und Japan. Das Ensemble ist besonders international besetzt, die Musiker stammen aus Deutschland, Japan, Frankreich und Italien. Zumeist angeführt von Blockflöte und Violine widmet es sich der Instrumentalmusik des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts, dabei spielen die Kenntnis der barocken Ausdrucksformen, aber auch Improvisation eine große Rolle.

Theatrum affectuum
founded in 2003, specialises in music from 17th and 18th century. Using the combination of recorder, one or two violins, cello and harpsichord, the ensemble has an individual and energetic approach to performing baroque music. Press reviews have described the ensemble’s interpretations as both profound and witty.

Ensemble leader Andreas Boehlen, also a jazz-saxophon player, incorporates a wide array of historical improvisation into every concert program.
