Info for Liszt: Intégrale des Rhapsodies hongroises (Remastered 2024)

Between 1839 and 1847, Liszt enthusiastically discovered Gypsy music, which he saw as an expression of Hungarian genius, and set about composing a vast cycle that was not completed until 1885. Admittedly, he did not have the scientific arsenal of an ‘ethnomusicology’ that was still unknown at the time, but he left us some authentic masterpieces of incomparable inventiveness. The popularity of these Hungarian Rhapsodies has never waned in our concert halls, and quite rightly so, with audiences surrendering to their wild virtuosity, their melodic verve and their unstoppable expressive sincerity.

Viscerally attached to these scores, of which he is one of the great interpreters, Denis Pascal resolutely turns his back on any literal folklore: while preserving the rhythmic vigour or even the roughness of these rhapsodies, he masterfully reminds us that they are landscapes as poetic as they are dreamlike, paying careful attention to the construction and colours of the Lisztian piano.
