Info for Love Is Back In Style (Remastered)

The Stylistics, justifiably considered one of the premier vocal groups in the world of classic soul recorded the LOVE IS BACK IN STYLE album in 1994 with award-winning producer/songwriter and music man Preston Glass. SoulMusic Records in association with Platinum Garage Records is proud to announce its worldwide digital release via Warner X.

The Stylistics are renowned for their vocal harmonies and LOVE IS BACK IN STYLE is a testament to the timeless quality of their artistry. The group – known for such classics as “Betcha By Golly Wow,” “You Are Everything” and “You Make Me Feel Brand New” – first came to prominence in 1971 working with Thom Bell, the legendary producer, songwriter and arranger, one of the architects of Philly Soul.In 1994, three original members of the group (Russell Thompkins, Airrion Love and Herb Murrell) cut this wonderful album with Preston Glass, a protege of Thom Bell at the outset of his own career.

Available for the first time digitally, the original 1994 CD release prompted the following comments in an All Music Guide review: “A few tracks into this and you’ll think you’re listening to a reunion of the Stylistics and Thom Bell…This one…surrounds the group with elegance and first-class Philly songs and arrangements. Russell Thompkins’ effortless falsetto never sounded better, and the same is true for Herb Murrell, and Aiiron Love, whose deeper register takes “Love Can Heal a Wounded Heart” to lofty heights. There are too many keepers…to single out favorites, but if you enjoyed the early Stylistics, you’ll love this well-crafted and well-executed gem.”

The Stylistics

Digitally remastered

The Stylistics
were an American soul group from Philadelphia, formed in 1966. The group released seven albums on Avco between 1971 and 1975, followed by five albums on H&L during the second half of the decade.

The Stylistics formed through the merger of two Philadelphia groups, The Percussions and The Monarchs. Singers Russell Thompkins Jr., James Smith, and Airrion Love hailed from the Monarchs; James Dunn and Herb Murrell came from the Percussions.

In 1970, The Stylistics debuted with the single “You’re a Big Girl Now” (b/w “Let the Junkie Bust the Pusher”) on local-press Sebring. Both sides were co-written by Marty Bryant, their road manager, and Robert Douglas, who played in their backing band Slim & the Boys. After some regional airplay, the single was picked up by Avco Records, which signed the group in 1971.

Avco linked The Stylistics with producer Thom Bell, who’d generated a string of hits with The Delfonics. Bell, in his first act of creative control with the new signing, assigned lead-vocal duties to the group’s high-tenor, Russell Thompkins Jr.

Members: Airrion Love (tenor vocals, lead vocals), Herbert “Herbie” Murrell (baritone vocals, lead vocals), Russell Thompkins Jr. (lead vocals, 1966-2000), James Dunn (baritone vocals, 1966-80), James Smith (bass vocals, 1966-80)
