Renowned Canadian pianist and composer Kris Davis, fronting her band Diatom Ribbons, will release a double album entitled "Live at the Village Vanguard".

On this new album - recorded during a concert held at the legendary Village Vanguard in New York - Kris Davis is backed by the brilliant line-up of Terri Lyne Carrington (Terri Lyne Carrington & Social Science, New Standards) on drums, Val Jeanty (Turning Jewels Into Water, Douglas Kearney & Val Jeanty Duo) on turntables and electronics, Trevor Dunn (Trevor Dunn's trio-Convulsant, Tomahawk) on bass and Julian Lage (Julian Lage Trio, John Zorn's New Masada Quartet) on guitar.

Kris Davis' lush musical output spans the albums Lifespan in 2004 (with Tony Malaby, Russ Johnson, Jason Rigby, Eivind Opsvik and Jeff Davis), The Slightest Shift in 2006 and 2008's Rye Eclipse (both in quartet with Tony Malaby, Eivind Opsvik and Jeff Davis), Eivind Opsvik and Jeff Davis), two trio albums with double bassist John Hébert and drummer Tom Rainey (Good Citizen in 2010 and Waiting For You To Grow in 2014) and the solo piano albums Aeriol Piano in 2012 and Massive Threads in 2013.

His discography as a leader is completed by 2013's Capricorn Climber (with Mat Maneri, Ingrid Laubrock, Trevor Dunn and Tom Rainey), 2015's Save Your Breath with the Infrasound octet, 2016's Duopoly (featuring Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, Craig Taborn, Angelica Sanchez, Billy Drummond, Marcus Gilmore, Tim Berne and Don Byron), Octopus in 2018 (a duo with Craig Taborn) and Diatom Ribbons in 2019, an album on which she was joined by Val Jeanty, Esperanza Spalding, Nels Cline, Marc Ribot, Terri Lyne Carrington, Tony Malaby, JD Allen, Trevor Dunn and Ches Smith.

To the aforementioned, we can add the work of the Borderlands Trio (a project in which he shares credits with Stephan Crump and Eric McPherson documented on the albums Asteroidea in 2017 and Wandersphere in 2021), the duo with Ingrid Laubrock on Blood Moon in 2020 and the participation in the Michael Formanek Elusion Quartet, Tom Rainey Obbliggato and Paradoxical Frog.

Kris Davis, on Live at the Village Vanguard, deepens the aesthetic postulates of the 2019 album Diatom Ribbons and brings together a vast range of influences - both musical and philosophical - including Wayne Shorter, Olivier Messiaen, Sun Ra, Geri Allen, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Charlie Parker, Eric Dolphy, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Paul Bley and Conlon Nancarrow, among others.

The new material proposed by the band led by Kris Davis brings together original compositions such as Endless Columns, Nine Hats (a piece that deconstructs elements from Eric Dolphy's Hat and Beard and Conlon Nancarrow's Study No. 9 for Player Piano) and Conlon Nancarrow's The New Music. 9 for Player Piano by Conlon Nancarrow) and the three-movement Bird Suite (inspired by the work of Charlie Parker and Olivier Messiaen's Petites esquisses d'oiseasux) with unique re-readings of Ronald Shannon Jackson's Alice in the Congo, Geri Allen's The Dancer and Wayne Shorter's Dolores.

Pianist Kris Davis, has made her mark internationally as a master improviser, composer, bandleader and highly sought-after sideperson. Davis won a Grammy in 2023 for Best Jazz Instrumental album on Terri Lyne Carrington’s album New Standards, and she was voted 2022 and 2020 Pianist of the Year in The Downbeat critics poll. She also won a Doris Duke Artist Award in 2021.

Kris Davis
was named 2017 Rising Star Pianist/2018 Rising Star Artist in Downbeat magazine and dubbed one of the music’s top up-and-comers in a 2012 New York Times article titled “New Pilots at the Keyboard,” with the newspaper saying: “One method for deciding where to hear jazz on a given night has been to track down the pianist Kris Davis.” To date, Davis has released twelve recordings as leader. Her 2016 release, Duopoly, made The New York Times, Pop Matters, NPR, LA Times, and Jazz Times best albums of 2016. Davis works as a collaborator and side person with artists such as John Zorn, Terri Lyne Carrington, Craig Taborn, Tyshawn Sorey, Eric Revis, Michael Formanek, Tony Malaby, Ingrid Laubrock, Julian Lage, Mary Halvorson and Tom Rainey. Davis received a Doris Duke Impact award in 2015 and multiple commissions to compose new works from The Shifting Foundation, The Jazz Gallery/Jerome Foundation and the Canada Council for the Arts. She is the Associate Program Director of Creative Development for the Insitute Jazz and Gender Justice at Berklee College of Music.
