Info for Robert Schumann: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4, Manfred Overture
Wilhelm Furtwängler was an excellent pianist and accompanied leading singers at opera rehearsals and lieder recitals by Wolf, Schubert and Schumann. He did not consider Schumann to be a great orchestral composer, yet refused to authenticate Mahler's versions of Symphonies Nos.2 and 3. Here we have what Furtwängler chose to bequeath to posterity, including his consummate reading of Schumann's Symphony No.4.
