Info for All in Twilight

This collaboration started out with an idea of somehow combining the fields of classical contemporary music and contemporary jazz improvisation, creating a bridge between the musical worlds. The resulting album, All in Twilight, is driven by a deep admiration for the original music and its expressive potential. Toru Takemitsu´s guitar suite All in Twilight with its richness and wide musical spectrum, Erland von Koch’s Utanmyra-variationer based on a Swedish folk music tune, the explosive guitar piece Fuoco by French composer Roland Dyens and Thin Places, a new composition written for the duo by Stefan Klaverdal.

"An intimate and fruitful meeting across the genre boundaries. David Härenstam belongs to our country's top classical guitarists, and Peter Knudsen is a highly rated jazz pianist and teacher at Örebros Music Collage. The two have put together a cross-border concert program - a mix of classical, jazz, tango and folk music. The duo played selected movements from the Japanese composer Tōru Takemitsus suite All in Twilight, and Astor Piazzola's fiery Histoire du Tango. In addition, Erland von Koch's 'Utanmyra variations' were interpreted, based on the folk melody now associated with Jan Johansson, as well as a Hector Villa Lobo's guitar concert. As an encore, one of Piazzola's most beautiful melodies, Oblivion, was invited. The compositions were chosen with care: beautiful, virtuoso and rarely heard.' 'The improvised elements did not feel clogged, but worked very well in the context. Sometimes it was even difficult to know what was written and what was improvised. David Härenstam
Since completing his higher musical studies for an Advanced Diploma under Professor John Mills at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, David Härenstam has worked on a long list of CDs and radio and TV recordings. He has toured Europe, China and Australia both as soloist and with various ensembles, performing music that ranges from Baroque to modern art music.

David Härenstam is known for his successful recital programs, captured on the internationally acclaimed CD ’Recital’, that made critics write ’one of the leading guitarists of his generation’ and ’Perfect virtuoso technique without any weaknesses’ or as Classical Guitar Magazine (USA) puts it: ’Technical wizardry… wonderfully delivered and hauntingly beautiful”. David combines quick wit and an easy going scene persona with deep understanding and respect for the music.

Among many successful ensembles there is the Sparf/Härenstam Duo with acclaimed violinist Nils-Erik Sparf who has recorded four CD:s together and played over 160 concerts. Duo Dēlinquō, with the solo flutist at the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra Peter Fridholm, which concentrates on contemporary music with the CD 'Fragile Phrases' with music written especially for this duo. In addition, Härenstam has a trio that focuses on the virtuoso music of Paganini that includes cellist Andreas Brantelid and the aforementioned violinist Nils-Erik Sparf.

David has also participated in numerous recordings with various artists and musicians, including cellist Andreas Brantelid, clarinetist Kjell Fagéus, pianist Bengt Forsberg, as well as actress Stina Ekblad and singer-song writer Sophie Moleta (NZ). David is also chosen as Artist in Residence at Lunnevads Folkhögskola and is the Artistic director of Stockholm Chamber Music and In Between Music Festival. A new CD with pianist Peter Knudsen and the music of Toru Takemitsu is also soon to be released.
