Info for Holy Spirit

The organ in the town church of Waltershausen, built between 1724 and 1755 and designed by Tobias Heinrich Gottfried Trost, is not only the largest baroque organ in Thuringia, but with its three manuals, 47 stops and approx. 7,000 pipes - 70 % of which are still original - it is a reference instrument for the interpretation of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in particular. (As an organ expert and outstanding organist, Bach was closely acquainted with Trost's instruments).

The present programme presents the advantages of this organ through famous organ works by Bach from different phases of his creative work: The Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565, the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor BWV 582 and the Fantasy in G major BWV 572 were composed between 1707 and 1712 in Arnstadt, Mühlhausen and Weimar, while the Sonata No. 3 in D minor BWV 527 and the chorale arrangements represent Bach's Leipzig period from 1725 onwards. The organist Ann-Helena Schlüter presents the fascinating sound of the Trost organ in all its facets and lets the listener rediscover Bach's famous compositions as well as works by Johann Adam Reincken and Heinrich Scheidemann in authentic sound.
