Info for Bach & Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Guitar Music

The present release is the second solo album of the young German guitarist Elise Neumann. She chose to combine two seemingly different composers on this album: J.S. Bach and Mario Castelnuevo-Tedesco. While at first one might have difficulty drawing a connection between the two composers, they are alike in their compositional forms. Like J.S. Bach, Castelnuevo-Tedesco wrote music in the form of the suite, but his musical ideas are completely different. Elise Neumann plays with her acclaimed warm and soulful tone on a rare instrument built by the luthier Daniel Friederich in 1969. On this recording, instrument and player form a perfect team, establishing a most natural, effortless and deeply musical interpretation of these well-known works.

Elise Neumann, classical guitar

Elise Neumann
born in Rostock, received her first cello lessons from the age of six. A few years later, she began guitar lessons with her mother Margit Neumann. Numerous awards at national and international competitions for guitar followed.

Elise Neumann studied guitar with Franz Halász at the University of Music in Augsburg and obtained an arts degree with a distinction there. She then continued at the Nuremberg University of Music where she was awarded the master class diploma (Meisterklassendiplom). There she also took postgraduate studies in Early Music with Julian Behr. Furthermore, as a scholarship holder of the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD, she also received tuition from Professor Oscar Ghiglia in Italy.

Apart from her artistic studies, she completed a Master of Music for instrumental teaching at the University of Music Lübeck.

Elise Neumann participated in numerous master classes, with Pavel Steidl, Fabio Zanon, Alex Garrobé, Carlo Marchione, Ricardo Gallén and Marcin Dylla amongst others, and courses on the performance practice of Early Music with Joachim Held, Hartwig Groth, Peter Thalheimer and Massimo Lonardi.

In 2008, she was the winner of the first prize "Premio Accademia Santoro-Award" of the competition Concorso Internazionale di Chitarra - Omaggio a Joaquín Rodrigo in Italy. In 2011, she won first prize at the International Agustín Barrios Guitar Competition in Nuoro, Italy. Her debut CD came out on the label Brilliant Classics in 2012.

Aside from concerts Elise Neumann has worked as a lecturer for guitar at Lübeck University of Music since 2013.
