The present recording introduces a rediscovery which enlarges the repertoire of sacred music:

The “Muri Mass” mass, here released for the first time, was discovered in the library of the abbey at Einsiedeln. It was catalogued there as the anonymous “Muri Mass” but was identified in 2005 as a work by Johann Valentin Rathgeber. The present recording restores the music to its place of origin. Recorded in the abbey church of Muri, the outstanding acoustics of the church with its splendid baroque architecture, the original sound of the composition and the interpretation with baroque instruments meet and form a unique whole. With the “Muri Mass” the Kloster Muri has regained a representative document of its rich musical tradition.

To complement the existing corpus of instruments from the baroque era, a number of replica historical instruments were reconstructed; these include the trumpet marine, a monochord ingeniously designed so as to sound like a trumpet, and the chordophone drum whose sound is produced by striking a single string.

Solo concertos taken from Johann Valentin Rathgeber’s “Chelys sonora” and recorded here as well present other historical instruments (baroque violin, baroque trumpet and baroque clarinet). The trumpet marine is also represented in a solo concerto by Telonius.

The Cappella Murensis and the ensemble arcimboldo ensure exceptional artistic quality. With this recording they present themselves to a wide audience for the first time. These professional ensembles, arisen from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and directed by Johannes Strobl and Thilo Hirsch, are an integral part of the Swiss baroque scene. The recording documents their pure, fresh choral sound, their technical precision, their expression which is shapeable and energetic and their boundless zest for music-making. Thilo Hirsch
studierte an der Schola Cantorum Basel Viola da gamba bei Christophe Coin und Gesang bei R. Levitt und Kurt Widmer. Seit 1991 ist er künstlerischer Leiter des ensemble arcimboldo, mit welchem er schon an zahlreichen Konzerten, Rundfunkaufnahmen (u.a. am Projekt d’amore des WDR Köln, 2005) und CD-Produktionen teilgenommen hat. 1996 gründete Thilo Hirsch das Theaterensemble TEATRO ARCIMBOLDO. Vom Erfolg dieser Arbeit zeugen die Einladungen zu vielen europäischen Festivals und die begeisterten Kritiken: „Sinnenrausch, köstliches Musiktheater“/Basler Zeitung, „faszinierendes Tanztheater“/ Schwetzinger Zeitung, „Spektakel für alle Sinne auf mitreißendem Niveau“/Fränkischer Tag, „Ein Abend der Maßstäbe setze“/Thüringer Allgemeine oder „kostbares Juwel, das das Publikum mit lang anhaltendem, stürmischem Applaus würdigte.“/Schwetzinger Woche.

Sein Interesse für seltene Streichinstrumente führte dazu, dass sich Thilo Hirsch auch der Erforschung des Tromba marina-Spiels widmete. Er ist nun einer der wenigen Experten für dieses außergewöhnliche, im Barock weit verbreitete Instrument. Ab 2007 arbeitet er zudem an einem Forschungsprojekt der Schola Cantorum Basel zum Thema: \"La Grande Écurie - Erforschung und Rekonstruktion der Instrumente und ihres Repertoires am Hof Ludwigs XIV und XV.\" Seit 1992 wurde Thilo Hirsch für Konzerte, CD- und Rundfunkaufnahmen unter anderem von Michel Corboz (Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne), Ensemble TURICUM, Parthenia Vocal, Basler Madrigalisten, Tölzer Knabenchor, Singknaben Solothurn und dem Gulbenkian Choir/Lissabon verpflichtet. Seine Konzertreisen und Tourneen führten ihn schon durch ganz Europa, nach Nordafrika und Nordamerika.

Das ensemble arcimboldo, Basel (www.arcimboldo.ch) wurde 1991 von Thilo Hirsch gegründet. Die Kernbesetzung ist ein Continuo-Ensemble mit Viola da gamba/Violone, Orgel/Cembalo und Chitarrone/Laute. Dieses wird je nach Anforderung um andere Continuo-Instrumente (wie Violoncello, Fagott, Harfe, Lirone), Melodieinstrumente (Violinen, Zinken, Trompeten oder Trombe marine) und SängerInnen erweitert. Alle Ensemblemitglieder haben an renommierten Instituten für Alte Musik wie der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis oder dem Königlichen Konservatorium Den Haag studiert. Das ensemble arcimboldo ist an zahlreichen europäischen Festivals aufgetreten, (Festival Atlantico/Madeira, Mozartfest Schloss Schwetzingen, Ekhof-Festival, Festival Fränkischer Sommer, Barockfest Münster). Neben Rundfunkaufnahmen etwa beim Projekt d’amore des WDR Köln/2005 oder der Musica Antiqua-Reihe des Bayerischen Rundfunks/2004 arbeitet das ensemble arcimboldo auch mit verschiedenen Vokalensembles zusammen und hat mehrere CDs aufgenommen.
