Info for Treble & Bass - Kleiberg Concertos

Marianne Thorsen is widely known for her recording of MOZART violin concertos with TrondheimSolistene. Now she demonstrates what beauty that lies in the Violin Concerto of our classical contemporary composer Ståle Kleiberg. Göran Sjölin brings the sonic qualities of the double bass into new light, and both solo concertos are supported by a widely staged Trondheim Symphony Orchestra in an exceptional surround sound recording.

Ståle KLEIBERG: - Concerto for Violin and Orchestra - Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra

If we seek a stylistic reference point for Kleiberg's music, it is perhaps not fanciful to refer to its recovery of certain qualities that we associate with northern Europe during the first half of the twentieth century. Composers as different as Sibelius, Nielsen and Vaughan Williams all established unique dialogues with central European and French modernists, but in ways that allowed for a tone of lofty idealism, even at times of frank romanticism that was unavailable to the modernists themselves. Kleiberg seems to continue and to extend dialogues of this kind. He has never been a slave to fashion, but it is striking that the neo-romanticism that is his most natural mode of expression, has once again become a part of our general culture.

'A fine and very impressive pair of string concertos, authoritatively played by the soloists with rich and powerful support by the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and conductor Daniel Reuss. Enthusiastically recommended.' (sa-cd.net)

Marianne Thorsen, Violin
Marianne Thorsen has established herself as one of Norway's leading violinists and has recently performed with orchestras including the Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Royal Danish Orchestra, Berlin Symphony, Baden-Baden Philharmonic, Prague Philharmonia, Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Slovak Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic. In her homeland, she plays regularly with the Oslo Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic, Trondheim Symphony, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony and the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestras.

Marianne Thorsen has won many international competitions including, most notably, the 2003 Sion International Violin Competition, and, in 1998, she was chosen as the Norwegian Concert Institute's Young Musician of the Year. She studied with György Pauk at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she was awarded the DipRAM, the Academy's highest award for performance.

Thorsen enjoys a regular collaboration with the Trondheim Soloists, with whom she recently toured and recorded Mozart: Violin Concertos Nos 3, 4 and 5 for 2L Recordings to great critical acclaim: the disc was awarded the Norwegian Spelleman Prize. Her latest recording for 2L (Ståle Kleiberg's Violin Concerto with the Trondheim Symphony) was also received most favourably and has received a Grammy nomination for 2010. A CD of Norwegian music by Johan Halvorsen with Thorsen as soloist alongside the Bergen Philharmonic conducted by Neeme Järvi, has recently been released by Chandos, with volume 2 following later in 2010.

In 2004, Marianne Thorsen gave the world premiere, with the Trondheim Symphony, of a violin concerto dedicated to her by the Norwegian composer Ketil Hvoslef. A subsequent performance in 2005, with the Oslo Philharmonic under Vassily Sinaisky, was broadcast on national Norwegian television (NRK) - see above.

As a chamber musician, Thorsen has performed with such eminent artists as Leif Ove Andsnes, Truls Mørk, Pascal Rogé, Lars Anders Tomter, Frans Helmerson and the Norwegian pianist Håvard Gimse, with whom she recorded a CD for Simax Classics of duo recital repertoire. She was a founder member of the Leopold String Trio, with whom she has performed extensively at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Musikverein in Vienna, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and the Wigmore Hall, as well as at the Edinburgh, Bath and Cheltenham Festivals (live broadcasts for BBC Radio 3). The Trio have recorded numerous CDs for Hyperion to great critical acclaim, including the complete Beethoven String Trios and Mozart: Divertimento K563, Schubert's 'Trout' Quintet, as well as the Mozart Piano Quartets with Paul Lewis and the complete Brahms Piano Quartets with Marc-André Hamelin.

Trondheim Symfoniorkester
Trondheim Symphony Orchestra (TSO) takes it´s place in the extensive musical heritage of the city of Trondheim. Indeed, before the 19th century Trondheim was the main focal point for sacred music in Scandinavia. This encouraged many significant musicians of their time to settle here. The growth and expansion of European music culture in the 18th and 19th centuries was also mirrored within the city. This period saw the foundation of several music societies.

TSO itself was founded in 1909. The development of the orchestra gained impetus with the jubilee of St. Olav in 1930. In more recent times TSO has established a solid position as an inspiring impulse not only for the local musical life but for the country as a whole. Recent successful tours in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and China with high artistic quality has enhanced the orchestra´s international reputation. From 2009 TSO continued it´s growth through a closer cooperation with the Trondheim Soloists which resulted in an increased complement of 90 musicians. The Chief conductor is currently Krzysztof Urbanski.

Daniel Reuss, Conductor
Daniel Reuss (born 1961) studied with Barend Schuurman at the Rotterdam Conservatory. In 1990, he became director of Cappella Amsterdam, which he turned into a full-time professional ensemble that is now one of the most sought after in the Netherlands.

From 2003 until 2006 year he was chief conductor of the RIAS Kammerchor in Berlin, with whom he recorded a number of successful CDs. Their CD with works by Martin and Messiaen (released by Harmonia Mundi) won both the "Diapason d'or de l'année 2004" and the "Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik". The CD's Les Noces, Le vin Herbé and Händels Solomon have also been critically acclaimed (reviews Le Vin Herbé).

In summer 2006, at the invitation of Pierre Boulez, Daniel Reuss teached and conducted at the summer 2006 Lucerne Festival Academy. In February 2007, Reuss made his debut at the English National Opera, with Händel's Agrippina. From September 2008 he is appointed artistic director and chief conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
