Info for Mozart: Duo Sonatas, Vol. 1

Catherine Mackintosh and Geoffrey Govier met at the Royal College of Music and in the 1980s formed Duo Amadè specifically to perform the charming and intimate duo sonatas by Mozart, often with readings from Mozart’s family letters. In 2006 they played the whole cycle at the Royal College of Music and are now intent upon recording

the works of disc. Volume 1 covers the sonatas KV 301, KV 302 and KV 303, composed at Mannhein in 1778, and couple them with two sets of variations, KV 359 and KV 360, based on French popular tunes. Catherine Mackintosh is part of The Purcell Quartet who have been recording for Chandos for many years and she only recently stepped down as leader of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Geoffrey Govier is a renowned fortepianist, teacher and editor. Both play fine period instruments, the violin dating from 1703 while the fortepiano is made by Christopher Clare after an instrument by Anton Walter.

"Duo Amade embarks on its Mozart project with sytlish, technically proficient and immensely enjoyable accounts of three sonatas and two variation sets Both variation sets (K359 and K360) are deftly characterises and the recorded sound is more faithful than many period instrument recordings." (Robin Stowell, Early Music Today)

"For Catherine Mackintosh and Geoffrey Govier the ‘rules’ of historically informed performance have become second nature; we get the impression they’re playing for sheer enjoyment of the music. All the distinctive moments are appreciated and given due emphasis but in a spontaneous way, the interpretative points never going beyond what musicians with good rapport might do on the spur of the moment. Yet it’s obvious that Govier and Mackintosh are careful, as well as spirited, interpreters. The recorded sound and balance are excellent, and they artfully control their dynamics so that principal and subsidiary lines are clearly distinguished." (Gramophone)

"Classical sensitivity and enchantment illuminate these infectiously buoyant performances, expertly played on authentic instruments." (Early Music Review)
