Last Dance – New Music for Jazz Orchestra by Ed Partyka. Compositions and arrangements by Ed Partyka, artistic director and chief conductor of the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, tailored to the expanded composition of the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra.

On this album UMO’s expanded instrumentation consists of an acoustic rhythm section, five trumpets, French horn, three trombones, tuba and all five saxophone players doubling admirably on a wide variety of woodwind instruments, from flute to contrabass clarinet (and almost everything in-between). Thanks to this impressive array of instruments in the hands of the outstanding musicians of UMO, the soundscape of the album is lush and fervent and Partyka’s sonorous voicings and rich harmonies provide a warm and luxurious orchestral cushion for melancholy melodies and expressive improvised solos.

The album was created in the exceptional circumstances forced by the pandemic and was recorded in Helsinki in the autumn of 2020.

UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra
is the only professional orchestra in Finland specialised in jazz and new rhythm-oriented music. The big band of 16 musicians plays about 100 concerts every year in Finland and abroad. The orchestra plays a diverse range of modern music that is on the pulse of the times. The programme consists from jazz to soul and classical music, mixing old and new in surprising way, from children to senior citizens. Musicians in UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra are some of the best jazz musicians in Finland. There are over 100 musicians, composers, directors and artists working with the orchestra every year. The band also acts as a hands-on educational establishment for Finnish musicians in the fields of jazz and popular music.

Ed Partyka
Der 1967 in Chicago in den USA geborene Posaunist, Tubist, Komponist, Arrangeur und Dirigent Edward Anthony „Ed” Partyka wurde im Jahr 2006 zum Professor für Jazztheorie und Komposition an die Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz berufen. Daneben doziert er an der Hochschule Luzern in der Schweiz.

1998 gewann er den ersten Musikpreis des vom norddeutschen Rundfunk NDR für Dirigenten im Bereich Big Band Jazz ausgeschriebenen Wettbewerbes. Im selben Jahr wurde ihm im Rahmen der von der „Jazz Composers Alliance“ in Boston / USA vergebenen „Julius Hemphill Composition Awards“ ein weiterer erster Preis in der Kategorie „Jazzorchester” zuerkannt.

Als Posaunist und Tubist war Partyka ab 1997 in Bob Brookmeyers New Art Orchestra beschäftigt und wirkte in diesem Ensemble bei zahlreichen Konzerten und Aufnahmen mit. Darauf folgten weitere Engagements in den Bläsersätzen von Ensembles wie der WDR Big Band, NDR Big Band, Mnozil Brass und Gansch & Roses.

Zu weiteren Stationen seines musikalischen Schaffens zählen u.a. die Zusammenarbeit mit Carla Bley und Steve Swallow und dem Partyka Brass Quintet, zahlreiche Tourneen und neun CD Produktionen mit dem Vienna Art Orchestra, Engagements als Orchesterleiter bei der NDR-, HR- und RIAS-Big Band, Danish Radio Big Band sowie der slowenischen RTV Big Band, dem Jazz Orchester Regensburg/ Volvo Big Band, dem Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra WAYJO, dem Zürich Jazz Orchestra, dem niederländischen Jazz Orchestra of The Concertgebouw und viele andere.

Von 2000 bis 2007 leitete Partyka das in Nürnberg ansässige Sunday Night Orchestra. Zusammen mit der israelischen Sängerin Efrat Alony nahm das Ensemble unter Partykas Leitung das Album „Overcast – The Music Of Ed Partyka“ auf, das 2008 erschien. Ebenfalls mit Alony, diesmal jedoch als Leiter seines eigenen Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestras, veröffentlichte er drei Jahre später das Album „Songs Of Love Lost“. Im Jahr 2014 erschien mit „Hits! Volume 1“ das zweite Album und im November 2017 das bisher aktuellste Album des Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestra „Kopfkino“. Das amerikanische Magazin „Down Beat“ besprach Partykas Aktivitäten und die Ausrichtung des Grazer Jazzinstitutes unter dem Titel „Creating A More Complete Artist - Jazz Musician-Educator - Ed Partyka Finds A Wealth Of Creative Work In Europe“.

Ab dem Jahr 2019 übernimmt Ed Partyka die musikalische Leitung des renommierten UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra in Finnland.
