Kimbra’s new album Idols & Vices (Vol. 1) delves into the increasingly-complex realm of our digital existence, exploring themes of identity invention, toxic celebrity worship, and the allure of online personas. Executive produced by Kimbra and Taylor Graves – with contributions from Dan Edinburg, Tommy Raps, Skrillex, and more – Idols & Vices is a celebration of her early influences in music and a love of collaboration, joining with genre-bending artists like BANKS, Dawn Richard and DRAM.

Accompanied by mid 90s anime inspired visuals crafted by New Zealand animator, Greg Sharp, the animations follow 10 characters as they navigate through an abyss of elaborate fantasies and distractions while seeking moments of awakening. Idols & Vices (Vol. 1) is the follow-up to her 2023 album A Reckoning, a 10-track project that saw the artist at her most confessional encouraging listeners to find catharsis and connection through the songs. A Reckoning earned praise from outlets globally such as Double J (Feature Album), Billboard, The Guardian, Consequence, PAPER, The Telegraph and others, the album marked a distinctive new era for Kimbra.

"As I started building “Idols & Vices, Vol. 1” it became clear that the record had some strong central themes that were very different to “A Reckoning.” It largely revolved around collaboration for example and my voice felt less confessional and more mysterious. This record gave me a chance to build an entirely new world where I could reinvent myself alongside some of my best friends. Even before the animations came to life, I knew this album would feel more psychedelic and surreal. Since “A Reckoning” was so vulnerable and revealing, I was able to put back on the armour and fanfare when I worked on this record. It was my little secret. While “A Reckoning” rolled out, I knew I had a whole new record right round the corner that no one knew about. It was a great way to stay playful."

Thematically, Idols & Vices explores the increasingly complex realm of our digital existence. The songs delve into concepts like identity reinvention, toxic celebrity worship and the eventual disillusionment that follows. The protagonist journeys through a dark online abyss full of demi gods and the pursuit of more, more, more at the expense of our sanity. The characters slowly come to awaken and remember their connection to true self and return back to a state of presence.

New Zealand–born pop star Kimbra is a musical force innovating the shape of pop today as a songwriter, musician, producer, and adventurous performer. Her 2011 debut, Vows, No. 14 on the Billboard Top 200, was certified platinum in Australia and New Zealand. Kimbra exploded into the public consciousness that same year with “Somebody That I Used to Know,” a duet with Gotye that earned her two Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The song topped Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 2012 and was the bestselling song of that year in the U.S., eventually selling over 13 million copies. In 2014, she released the highly acclaimed album The Golden Echo, recruiting artists as diverse as Thundercat, Omar Rodríguez-López of the Mars Volta, Bilal, and John Legend to highlight her eclectic musical style.

Since her sophomore release, Kimbra has moved to New York, continuing to innovate her sound, performing with the Roots and David Byrne at the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in tribute to David Bowie, and also appearing at the Prince tribute at First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota, performing with his band, the Revolution. Alongside releasing a stand-alone single called “Sweet Relief" with producer Redinho, she released her third LP, Primal Heart, last year, which she coproduced with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Goldfrapp) before embarking on a worldwide tour, performing with acts as diverse as Byrne, Beck, and Odessa. Kimbra also released an additional version of the first single from Primal Heart featuring rapper Snoop Dogg, a new take and video for the standout track “Version of Me” featuring DAWN, and an EP entitled Songs from Primal Heart, Reimagined. The EP featured acoustic versions of four songs from the acclaimed full-length release. Kimbra will continue touring in 2019, including performances of intimate, unplugged versions of her songs to accompany the EP. This will further solidify her as one of today's most unpredictable and genre-defying mavericks.
